'Glee' Michael Jackson Episode: Rumored Set List Leaks1676521

Perez Hilton reports that January 24 episode includes a 'Beat It' and 'Billie Jean' mash-up.

"Glee" has already dedicated entire episodes to Madonna, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, and come 2012, it's the King of Pop's turn. A rumored set list for the January 24 "Glee" Michael Jackson tribute episode has hit the Web, and it features some of the late singer's greatest hits. Perez Hilton reports that 14 tracks have made the final cut, although the list has yet to be confirmed by anyone connected with the show.

The set list (along with who will perform the track) reportedly includes "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' " (Blaine), "Bad" (the New Directions and the Warblers), "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" (Finn and Rachel), "Smooth Criminal" (Santana and Sebastian), "Never Can Say Goodbye" (Quinn), "In the Closet" (Brittany and Santana), "We Are the World" (the New Directions and the Warblers), "Black and White" (Puck), "Ghost"/"Monster" (New Directions), "Beat It"/"Billie Jean" (Warblers), "The Way You Make Me Feel" (Kurt) and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (Artie). This is hardly the first time the show has paid homage to Jackson. Back in 2010, the New Directions performed his track "Thriller," complete with zombie garb, during an episode that aired after the Super Bowl. The show has also previously covered "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" and "Man in the Mirror." Back in 2010, the cast of the hit Fox show had only imagined what it would be like to have an entire episode dedicated to Jackson. "I would love to do a Michael Jackson episode," Amber Riley told MTV News at the time. "You know, it's so many [songs that I love], but my favorite song by him is 'Human Nature.' I love that song." While Riley seemed psyched about the opportunity, castmate Jenna Ushkowitz found the possibility a little more daunting. "That's a scary, scary episode to do," she said. "[But] that would be absolutely amazing." Are you happy with the rumored set list? What's missing? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

6.8M iOS, Android Devices Activated on Christmas Day Says Analytics Firm

People the world over activated a record breaking 6.8 million Android and iOS devices on Christmas Day this year.

According to app analytics firm Flurry, on Christmas Day, 6.8 million iOS and Android devices were activated, more than double the 2.5 million devices that were activated last year on the same day, representing an increase of 125 per cent.

The company said that during the first 20 days of December, 1.3 million to 1.8 million Android and iOS devices were activated each day, with an average of 1.5 million devices each day. On December 25, the number increased by more than 353 per cent, reaching 6.8 million.

A high number of device would also result in record breaking app downloads. Flurry, which tracks more than 140,000 applications, said that people downloaded an average of 108 million applications every day but on Christmas Day, the number soared to 242 million, representing an increase of 125 per cent.

"Historically, more iOS and Android apps are downloaded on Christmas than on any other day of the year. This is due to a massive influx of smartphones and tablets given as gifts. As fast as loved-ones can unwrap their shiny, new Galaxy IIs, iPhones, iPads, Kindle Fires, et cetera, they start loading them up with new apps," the company said.

GSM phones vulnerable to hijack scams: expert

Flaws in a widely used wireless technology could allow hackers to gain remote control of phones and instruct them to send text messages or make calls, according to an expert on mobile phone security.

They could use the vulnerability in the GSM technology ? which is used by most telecom operators globally and by billions of people ? to make calls or send texts to expensive, premium phone and messaging services in scams, said Karsten Nohl, head of Berlin-based Security Research Labs.

Nohl is a well-regarded expert on mobile security who last year identified a bug in GSM technology that makes calls vulnerable to tapping. He says he is calling attention to these flaws to pressure the industry into beefing up the security of their products.

Mobile security is a hot issue because hackers are paying unprecedented attention to the devices as smartphone sales have outpaced sales of PCs.

Only a few flaws have been found in GSM technology ? which stands for Global System for Mobile Communications ? over its 20-year history. Industry lobby group GSMA said on Tuesday it did not expect the new findings to affect its views on the security of the technology.

"The GSMA and its mobile network operator members are confident in the security of existing 2G GSM networks and real attacks on real networks against real customers are most unlikely," it said in a statement, adding that newer technologies are safer and not impacted by the new research.

GSMA's statement "on anticipated GSM security announcements" did not make clear whether the industry group had actually seen Nohl's latest research.

Security experts have previously identified a small number of viruses designed to infect smartphones, allowing hackers to take control of the devices and force them to make calls or send text messages. But Nohl said he has discovered a way to leverage previously disclosed vulnerabilities in GSM technology that could potentially threaten hundreds of thousands of phones.

"We can do it to hundreds of thousands of phones in a short time frame," Nohl told Reuters ahead of a presentation on the topic at a hacking convention in Berlin on Tuesday.

Smartphone malware is popping up at an unprecedented rate as people put more and more valuable information on the devices, using them to hold corporate secrets, conduct banking and function as digital wallets.

GSM became the dominant mobile technology globally in the late 1990s and even though new, faster mobile networks have been rolled out across the world, operators have stuck to their GSM networks to support older phones and to offer service when new networks fail.

The Berlin convention takes place just days after U.S. security think tank Strategic Forecasting Inc (Stratfor) said its website had been hacked and that some names of corporate subscribers had been made public. Activist hacker group Anonymous claimed responsibility.

Attacks on corporate landline phone systems are fairly common, often involving bogus premium-service phone lines that hackers set up in countries in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.

Fraudsters make calls to the numbers from hacked business phone systems or mobile phones, then collect their cash and move on before the activity is identified.

The phone users typically do not realize the problem until after they receive their bills, and telecommunications carriers often end up footing at least some of the costs.

Even though Nohl will not present all details of possible attacks at the conference, he said hackers will usually replicate the code needed for attacks within a few weeks.

Mobile networks of Germany's T-Mobile and France's SFR offer their clients the best protection against online criminals wanting to intercept their calls or track their movements, according to a new ranking Nohl will unveil at his presentation.

The new ranking, at gsmmap.org, is conducted by security researchers, who hope this will heighten the awareness of operators and consumers on the vulnerability of their mobile communications.

Researchers reviewed 32 operators in 11 countries and rated their performance based on how easy it was for them to intercept the calls, impersonate someone's device or track the device.

"None of the networks protects users very well," Nohl said.

The sample is set to grow from 32 carriers dramatically next year as the tool enables anyone to participate in data gathering by downloading measuring software to their phones.

Nohl said mobile telecom operators could easily improve their clients' security, in many cases by just updating their software.

Researchers reviewed operators in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Slovakia, Switzerland and Thailand.

NKorea pointing to heir's uncle playing key role (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea is showing the uncle and key patron of anointed heir Kim Jong Un wearing a military uniform with a general's insignia ? a strong sign he'll play a crucial role in helping the young man take over power and uphold the "military-first" policy initiated by his late father, Kim Jong Il.

As North Korea prepares for Kim Jong Il's funeral Wednesday, it is also warning South Korea against barring visits to Pyongyang by civilian groups hoping to pay respects, saying the obstruction will lead to "catastrophic consequences" for relations between the rivals.

While millions continue to mourn Kim Jong Il, North Korea is offering hints about Kim Jong Un's rise and the future composition of his inner circle. North Korea began hailing Kim Jong Un as "supreme leader" of the 1.2-million strong military over the weekend as it ramps up its campaign to install him as ruler.

Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was unveiled in September 2010 as his father's choice as successor, will be the third-generation Kim to rule the nation of 24 million.

Koreans should become "eternal revolutionary comrades" with Kim Jong Un, "the sun of the 21st century," the North's main Rodong Sinmun newspaper said Sunday in a commentary carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

State television showed footage Sunday of a uniformed Jang Song Thaek and his nephew Kim Jong Un paying their respects before Kim Jong Il's body, which is lying in state at Kumsusan Memorial Palace. Seoul's Unification Ministry said it was the first time Jang, usually seen in business suits, had been shown wearing a military uniform on state TV.

Jang, a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, is the husband of Kim Kyong Hui, younger sister of Kim Jong Il and a key Workers' Party official. South Korean lawmakers say intelligence officials have predicted that Jang and his wife will play larger roles supporting Kim Jong Un.

The new titles, a public show of support from top military leadership and the symbolic appearance of Jang in uniform send strong signals that North Korea will maintain Kim Jong Il's "military first" policy for the time being.

North Korea is in official mourning until Kim Jong Il's funeral Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

South Korea has permitted only two groups with ties to North Korea to visit and pay condolences ahead of the funeral and has rejected demands by several others.

The South Korean groups, led by the widow of former President Kim Dae-jung, who held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and a business leader whose late husband had ties to the North, plan to cross the heavily fortified border Monday for a two-day trip, according to Seoul's Unification Ministry.

On Saturday, Kim Jong Un again visited the palace where his father's body is lying in state ? this time as "supreme leader of the revolutionary armed forces" and accompanied by North Korea's top military brass, according to KCNA.

Earlier, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper urged Kim Jong Un to accept the top military post: "Comrade Kim Jong Un, please assume the supreme commandership, as wished by the people."

Kim Jong Un's father and grandfather led the country under different titles, and it remains unclear which other titles will be bestowed on him.

Kim Jong Un was promoted last year to four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party. He had been expected to assume a number of other key posts while being groomed to succeed his father.

His father's death comes at a sensitive time for North Korea, which was in the middle of discussions with the U.S. on food aid and restarting talks to dismantle the North's nuclear weapons program. Chronically short of food and suffering from a shortfall in basic staples after several harsh seasons, officials had been asking for help feeding its people even as North Koreans prepared for 2012 celebrations marking the 100th birthday of Kim Il Sung, North Korea's founder and the late father of Kim Jong Il.

Also, animosity with South Korea still lingers after two incidents blamed on North Korea killed 50 South Koreans last year.

Calls to rally behind Kim Jong Un, dubbed the "Great Successor" in the wake of his father's death on Dec. 17 from a heart attack, come amid displays of grief across North Korea.

On Sunday, the North's state TV repeatedly showed footage of wailing uniformed soldiers, many with shaved heads, and other citizens professing their tear-choked longing for Kim Jong Il as they visited mourning sites.

In Pyongyang, workers at drink kiosks handed steaming cups of water to shivering mourners, including children bundled up in colorful, thick parkas. State media said the drinks were arranged at the instruction of Kim Jong Un, who ordered officials to take special measures to protect the health of mourners.

"Deeply moved by the measures, all of the Korean people feel that Kim Jong Un is the leader of the people, as great as Kim Jong Il," KCNA said.

Tom Cruise returns to box office form with "MI4" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol" easily beat its rivals in the race to No. 1 at box offices over the Christmas holiday weekend, returning action star Tom Cruise to winning form after several recent flops.

"Ghost Protocol," the fourth movie in Cruise's "Mission: Impossible" series, earned an estimated $46 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters in the four days ending on Monday, according to its distributor Paramount Pictures. Its total estimated ticket sales have reached $78.6 million after debuting in Imax and other large-screen theaters last weekend.

At international theaters, the movie dubbed "MI4", which cost around $145 million to make, sold an additional $140 million worth of tickets through Sunday. Paramount noted its audience rating from researcher CinemaScore was an "A-" and Rottentomatoes.com, a website that combines critics' reviews, gave the movie a 94 percent positive rating overall.

"We're pleased with the way we went with the movie, starting with premium pricing on large screens and letting the reviews and word-of-mouth (publicity) get out ahead of the movie," said Don Harris, president of distribution for Paramount.

Important for leading man Cruise, 49, is that after several box office flops in recent years, including dramas "Valkyrie" and "Lions for Lambs," and action-packed "Knight and Day," the success of "Ghost Protocol" has meant a return to the top of box office charts.

Elsewhere, Warner Bros.' "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" took the No. 2 spot with an estimated $31.8 million over the four days, followed by 20th Century Fox family comedy "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" with a $20 million total that barely put it ahead of No. 4, adult thriller "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," at $19.4 million.

Since its midweek debut last week, "Dragon Tattoo" has earned $27.7 million. A Sony spokesman called it "a good start" that should build this coming week and into the new year.

HO HUM 2011, DOWN 4.45 PCT

Indeed, many new movies hit theaters ahead of, and during, the Christmas holiday weekend -- including "Dragon Tattoo," two movies from Steven Spielberg, "War Horse" and "The Adventures of Tintin," and the Cameron Crowe comedy, "We Bought A Zoo."

The studios expect strong demand in the days ahead while many families take time from work and school, but it is unlikely a surge can lead the domestic box office to topple last year's nearly $10.6 billion in annual ticket sales.

In fact, the top 12 movies this past weekend generated $114 million at box offices, down about 15 percent from last year, according to box office watcher Hollywood.com.

Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com now estimates total 2011 annual domestic (U.S. and Canada) box office at $10.1 billion by year's end, down 4.45 percent from 2010. Attendance so far in 2011 is off about 5 percent, while the average ticket price increased to $7.96 from $7.89.

Still, movie demand did pick up for some new titles over the weekend, and among those making a surge was Fox comedy "We Bought a Zoo," starring Matt Damon. It saw ticket sales jump 139 percent from Saturday to Sunday, its distributor 20th Century Fox said, landing it at No. 6 with $15.6 million, just behind family film "Tintin" at No. 5 with $16.1 million.

"I think playability and word-of-mouth is finally getting out" about "Zoo," said Chris Aronson, who heads domestic distribution for Fox. He noted the movie generated an "A" overall from moviegoers polled by CinemaScore.

Spielberg's "War Horse" landed in the No. 7 spot with $15 million, and another newcomer, thriller "The Darkest Hour," opened eighth with $5.5 million over the four days.

Rounding out the top 10 were holdovers "New Year's Eve" at No. 9 with slightly under $5 million and George Clooney drama "The Descendants" in the 10th position with $3.4 million.

Paramount Pictures is a unit of Viacom Inc. Warner Bros. is part of Time Warner Inc.. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" was released by the movie studio division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, a unit of Sony Corp. "Chipwrecked" and "Zoo" were both released by film divisions of 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp..

Virginia coach Mike London pledges $225,000 toward indoor practice facility

Mike London guided Virginia to an 8-4 season in 2011 and a berth in the Chick-fil-A Bowl Dec. 31 vs. Auburn?showing that the Cavaliers made a wise investment in hiring London in 2010 to turn around the struggling program.

Now it?s London who is making the investment into Virginia?s future.

London is pledging $225,000 to support the school?s efforts in building a new indoor practice facility for the team. The project?s cost is $13 million, and including London?s cash, the Cavaliers have raised $9.5 million for the project.

"The construction of the indoor practice facility is an important part of the effort to make our football program consistently successful," London said in a release. "That's why I want to show my personal support for the fundraising effort by making this pledge.

"The indoor facility will be a tremendous benefit for our team's in-season preparation and out-of-season conditioning."

Virginia hopes to have all of the money raised by the end of February and the project completed in time for 2013 spring practice.

Sony Tablet S, Tablet P to be bumped up to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Sony Tablet S Tablet P

Over the past month, we've seen Sony Ericsson confirm that its 2011 Xperia lineup of devices will be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich and that those updates will begin in late March or early April of next year. Now we can add another pair of devices to the list of Sony products getting Android 4.0, as an official Sony U.K. forum moderator has announced that updates to ICS will be released for the Tablet S and Tablet P. Unlike the Xperia devices, though, there's no word yet on when the upgrades might be arriving, but Sony does promise that more details will be revealed "in due course."

Good news, right? We haven't really heard much about either device ever since Sony announced availability details for them both earlier this year, but it's great to see the company continue to show support for the two slates. Now we just have to sit tight and wait for more information on the updates to come out. When exactly that'll happen is as much of a mystery as the actual release dates of the updates themselves, but we'll let you know more on the situation when we do.

Video: Last of U.S. troops leaving Iraq

>>> now to the war in iraq which the u.s. declared officially over this past thursday after nearly nine years, $800 billion, and some 4,500 american lives lost. now, with the last of the u.s. troops are heading home to their families just in time for the holidays. we'll get more now from nbc's chief foreign correspondent, richard engle.

>> a last roll call before going home . the u.s. military command closed last week in baghdad, but troops are still leaving iraq, crossing the border and coming here to kuwait .

>> this was, you know, so nice to be able to leave the country.

>> kuwait is the official outprocessing center where the war began nine years ago is where it is ending. kuwait 's lob 58 is now being described as the world's biggest parking lot. it's packed with $8 billion worth of vehicles.

>> it's coming all here. it's getting put on the property book and making sure we can account for all the equipment.

>> but not quite everything is going back. the military estimates about $220 billion worth of equipment is staying in iraq. transferred to the iraqi government . for the troops in kuwait , the procedure is all relatively simple, but can seem boring and slow. most of the troops spend about five days in kuwait , turning in gear, filling out paperwork, packing and loading. until, finally, a preflight inspection. then, as they pass a sign that reads freedom, the troops move to a holding pen, ironically called lockdown. with home so close and a war at their backs, kuwait can feel like the worst five-day layover. but the flights do eventually come. and after a war that tested and at times tore our nation, the army is going home . richard engle, nbc news, kuwait .

Defense bill nears passage in Congress (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A massive defense bill is on the brink of final passage after the Obama administration and Congress resolved a fierce struggle over the president's ability to prosecute terrorist suspects in the civilian justice system.

The House voted 283-136 for the $662 billion measure Wednesday night, a rare bipartisan vote that reflected strong support for annual legislation that authorizes money for the men and women of the military as well as weapons systems and the millions of jobs they generate in lawmakers' districts.

The Senate was expected to clear the bill Thursday and send it to President Barack Obama.

The House vote came just hours after the administration abandoned a veto threat over provisions dealing with the handling of terrorism suspects.

Applying pressure on House and Senate negotiators working on the bill last week, Obama and senior members of his national security team, including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, had sought modifications in the detainee provisions.

Negotiators announced the changes late Monday, clearing the way for White House acceptance.

In a statement, press secretary Jay Carney said the new bill "does not challenge the president's ability to collect intelligence, incapacitate dangerous terrorists and protect the American people."

Specifically, the bill would require that the military take custody of a suspect deemed to be a member of al-Qaida or its affiliates who is involved in plotting or committing attacks on the United States. There is an exemption for U.S. citizens.

House and Senate negotiators added language that says nothing in the bill will affect "existing criminal enforcement and national security authorities of the FBI or any other domestic law enforcement agency" with regard to a captured suspect "regardless of whether such ... person is held in military custody."

The bill also says the president can waive the provision based on national security.

"While we remain concerned about the uncertainty that this law will create for our counterterrorism professionals, the most recent changes give the president additional discretion in determining how the law will be implemented, consistent with our values and the rule of law, which are at the heart of our country's strength," Carney said.

Uncertainty was a major concern of FBI Director Robert Mueller, who expressed serious reservations about the detainee provisions.

Testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mueller said a coordinated effort by the military, intelligence agencies and law enforcement has weakened al-Qaida and captured or killed many of its leaders, including Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S.-born radical Islamic cleric. He suggested that the divisive provision in the bipartisan defense bill would deny that flexibility and prove impractical.

"The statute lacks clarity with regard to what happens at the time of arrest. It lacks clarity with regard to what happens if we had a case in Lackawanna, N.Y., and an arrest has to be made there and there's no military within several hundred miles," Mueller said. "What happens if we have ... a case that we're investigating on three individuals, two of whom are American citizens and would not go to military custody and the third is not an American citizen and could go to military custody?"

Unnerving many conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats, the legislation also would deny suspected terrorists, even U.S. citizens seized within the nation's borders, the right to trial and subject them to indefinite detention. House Republican leaders had to tamp down a small revolt among some rank-and-file who sought to delay a vote on the bill.

Some of the Republicans were concerned that the "president would use the military to round up American citizens," said Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., a member of the Armed Services panel.

The escalating fight over whether to treat suspects as prisoners of war or criminals has divided Democrats and Republicans, the Pentagon and Congress.

The administration insists that the military, law enforcement and intelligence officials need flexibility in the campaign against terrorism. Obama points to his administration's successes in killing bin Laden and al-Awlaki. Republicans counter that their efforts are necessary to respond to an evolving, post-Sept. 11 threat and that Obama has failed to produce a consistent policy on handling terror suspects.

Highlighting a period of austerity and a winding down of decade-old conflicts, the bill is $27 billion less than Obama requested and $43 billion less than Congress gave the Pentagon. The bill also authorizes money for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and national security programs in the Energy Department.

Frustrated with delays and cost overruns with the troubled F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft program, lawmakers planned to require the contractor, Lockheed Martin, to cover the expense of any extra costs on the next batch and future purchases of the aircraft. The Pentagon envisions buying 2,443 planes for the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy, but the price could make it the most expensive program in military history ? $1 trillion.

The legislation freezes $700 million for Pakistan until the defense secretary provides Congress a report on how Islamabad is countering the threat of improvised explosive devices.

It would impose tough new penalties on Iran, targeting foreign financial institutions that do business with the country's central bank. The president could waive those penalties if he notifies Congress that it's in the interest of national security.

ECB chief says euro zone on right track (Reuters)

BERLIN/BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Europe's top central banker said on Thursday that euro zone governments are on the right track to restore market confidence but reminded them that an emergency program to buy their bonds was "neither eternal nor infinite".

Mario Draghi's comments came after a smooth Spanish bond auction eased fears of an accelerating slide in European markets following a summit last week that failed to reassure investors the single currency area is closer to resolving its debt crisis.

The European Central Bank chief said in a speech in Berlin that the 17 euro zone governments "are now on the right track and they are right in implementing budgetary consolidation resolutely.

"The unavoidable short-term (economic) contraction may be mitigated by the return of confidence," he said.

To mitigate risk aversion rife in markets, Draghi said more policy clarity was necessary, and he urged politicians to "speak unambiguously", then "deliver".

Spanish bond yields fell, narrowing the spread over German Bunds, after the country surprised markets by selling far more than the amount targeted in its last bond sale of the year, although come of its costs of borrowing remained close to euro-era highs.

The euro rose for a while above $1.30 after touching an 11-month low of $1.2945 on Wednesday, and European shares gained more than three-quarters of a percent partly due to relief over the Spanish auction.

With many financial institutions closing their books for the year, the next major market test for the euro zone is widely expected in mid-January, when Italy has to start rolling over more than 100 billion euros of expiring debt by April.

To try to restore market confidence in the euro zone's third largest economy, Rome's new technocratic government has called a confidence vote in parliament on Friday to speed up approval of a 33-billion euro ($43 billion)austerity package.

Prime Minister Mario Monti has raced to push through a law that cuts spending and raises taxes to shore up public finances and cut a debt running at 120 percent of gross domestic product. The government resorted to a confidence vote to curb debate on dozens of amendments, many tabled by the opposition Northern League.

GROWTH MISSING

European Union leaders will hold another summit in Brussels in late January or early February to discuss economic growth and jobs as the 27-nation bloc heads into a "quasi-recession," European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said on Thursday.

Germany and France called on Wednesday for an extra meeting to discuss growth at a time when the euro zone looks likely to enter recession in the last quarter of this year. EU leaders last met on December 8-9, when they agreed to forge a new pact for stricter enforcement of debt and deficit rules in the euro zone.

"In times of stagnation, in times of even quasi-recession, it is very important to have those topics on the agenda and not only speaking on fiscal consolidation," Van Rompuy said.

There are growing concerns that policymakers' focus on cutting spending to rapidly reduce deficits is making it harder to stimulate growth and create jobs, especially for the young.

Critics say the harsh austerity budgets being implemented across southern Europe will plunge those countries deeper into recession, fuelling a vicious cycle of economic contraction and falling revenues, and risking severe social unrest.

Greece, crushed under a debt mountain equivalent to 160 percent of annual output, is the most striking illustration. Its economy is now expected to contract by 6 percent this year and its budget deficit will top 10 percent of GDP despite draconian spending cuts.

The International Monetary Fund's chief negotiator with Athens, Poul Thomsen, urged the Greek government on Wednesday to rethink "taboos" and start laying off state workers because it could no longer rely on more tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts.

Draghi said that in the medium term, "sustainable growth can be achieved only by undertaking deep structural reforms that have been procrastinated for too long".

Speaking to the economically conservative Ludwig Erhard Foundation in Berlin under a banner bearing the quotation "Inflation is an expropriation without compensation for the benefit of the public purse", the Italian ECB chief was given a warm reception by the guardians of German monetary orthodoxy.

Asked how many more government bonds he would buy before a planned new treaty on fiscal union was ratified, Draghi replied: "We have an SMP (securities market program) in place and as I've said several times it is neither eternal nor infinite."

He quickly moved on to the next subject, eliciting laughter.

CPU Wars and c-Jump: the nerdiest card and board games ever

c-Jump
Board games and card games are kind of dorky to begin with. And there are plenty of titles out there that hold a special place in the heart of the nerd (just ask one about Settlers of Catan). But, there is a line, a line which even the nerdiest amongst us might not care to cross. For example, c-Jump -- a board game that teaches the basics of programming. Some of the spaces you'll land on in the course of your journey down the mountain include "goto jump;" and "switch (x) {". Then there's CPU Wars, for the three people out there that think Magic: The Gathering is too mainstream. In this card battle game you pit CPUs from throughout history against each other and attempt to collect all your adversary's processors. You can order c-Jump through ThinkGeek for $25 and pledge cash to CPU Wars over at Kickstarter. You'll find a video of the card game after the break.

EU accepts IBM antitrust concessions, ends probe (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? EU antitrust regulators accepted concessions offered by International Business Machines Corp to end an antitrust investigation and avert a possible fine, the European Commission said on Wednesday.

The U.S. company had in September proposed to provide certain spare parts and technical information to other companies which maintain its mainframe hardware and software, under fair and reasonable terms.

The European Commission said it was satisfied that the concessions, which were revised after a market test and are valid for five years, were sufficient to address competition issues.

"I am pleased that we could find a swift solution with IBM to our competition concerns. Timely interventions are crucial in fast-moving technology markets," EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said in a statement.

The Commission's decision confirmed what two sources familiar with the matter had told Reuters last week.

IBM said it was glad the matter had been resolved.

"IBM welcomes this final resolution of the inquiry into certain IBM mainframe maintenance practices and is pleased that the Commission's investigation of the IBM mainframe is now concluded," the company said in a statement.

Many big firms, universities and governments use mainframe computers to store and process large quantities of data.

This is the second case involving IBM that the European Commission has wrapped up this year. The EU watchdog closed an investigation into IBM in August after three small rivals dropped complaints.

The Commission, which acts as competition regulator for the EU and can fine companies up to 10 percent of their global turnover, has imposed billion-euro fines against technology firms such as Microsoft and Intel for breaching EU rules.

Winter Hazards for Your Pets - BlogPaws

Guest post by Lorie Huston, DVM

Besides the many hazards that come with the holidays, there are a few other hazards that winter, cold Dog-in-snow-martinarathgens weather, snow and other situations create for your pets.

Holiday Hazards

The holiday season comes with its own risks for your dog or cat.

  • Many of our favorite holiday foods pose a threat for our pets. Things like chocolate, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions and xylitol-containing sweets can be toxic when shared with our pets.
  • Plants such as holly, mistletoe and lilies can be poisonous as well. Interestingly, poinsettias pose far less risk but seem to get more attention.
  • Holiday decorations, such as ribbons and tinsel, can be dangerous if swallowed. Electrical cords can pose a threat for playful animals that mistake them for a toy. Likewise, batteries can be caustic if your pet bites into them.
Salt and Ice Melts

Many of us use salt or ice melts of some type to keep sidewalks and driveways navigable and free of ice. However, these substances can be irritating to your pets paws and even to his mouth and intestinal tract if licked off his paws.

Fortunately, there are pet-friendly ice melts that do not pose a threat. Use these products on your sidewalks and driveway instead of other products that are not made with pet safety in mind.

If you need to walk your dog in an area that does not use pet-friendly ice melt, clean his feet when you come indoors.

Antifreeze

Antifreeze is toxic to pets in even small doses. A teaspoon or two is enough to be fatal for a small dog or cat. Unfortunately, antifreeze has a sweet taste that dogs and even cats seem to enjoy. As a result, it is particularly dangerous.

Antifreeze affects your pet?s central nervous system and eventually his kidneys if ingested and essentially causes kidney failure. Though antifreeze toxicity is treatable, it needs to be treated immediately after ingestion if treatment is to be successful. Once your pet?s kidneys become damaged, treatment becomes much more difficult and is often not successful.

Store any unused antifreeze in a safe location out of the reach of your pet. Make sure your car is not leaking antifreeze.

Consider using ?pet-safe? antifreeze products instead. ?Pet-safe? products use propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol as is used in regular antifreeze. Though these ?pet-safe? products are less toxic than regular antifreeze, propylene glycol can still be toxic even though more must be ingested. Another alternative is the addition of a bitter-tasting agent to the antifreeze to mask the sweet flavor and make the antifreeze less attractive to pets.

Other Dangers in Inclement Weather

Needless to say, pets should not be housed or left outdoors for long periods of time in inclement weather. Frostbite and worse can occur for pets that are left outside in the cold for too long.?

Political gravity drags down Cain (Politico)

Even as this primary season tests many of the traditional rules of presidential politics, Herman Cain?s political demise serves as a vivid reminder that the fundamental laws of campaign gravity still apply.

The contours of the playing field might have changed ? the campaign is now being contested mostly on the debate stage, cable television and the internet ? but the expectations of voters remain the same.

Cain, who exited the race Saturday over allegations of sexual impropriety, demonstrated that candidates still must have a grasp on the issues, possess some degree of political experience and retain a competent staff.

Antipathy towards Washington may be soaring, but outsider status isn?t sufficient by itself to overcome deeper flaws.

In fact, GOP primary voters are indicating that they?d prefer a insider who?s competent than someone from outside the establishment who may not be up to the task of taking on President Obama.

There?s a reason why Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are the favorites in the final weeks before voting begins, and Cain is returning home to Georgia.

Romney has twice been tested in statewide campaigns by an exacting Boston press corps and ran the presidential gauntlet four years ago. Gingrich first ran for Congress during the Ford administration ? he lost twice before finally winning his seat ? and has been subjected to arguably as much scrutiny as any other modern political figure who hadn?t previously sought the White House. Both candidates are deeply versed on the affairs of state and have confronted major political challenges that steeled them for this moment.

Of course, an out-of-the-blue sex scandal would be difficult for any candidate, rookie or canny veteran, to survive. But Cain?s inept handling of it, combined with his staff?s malpractice,, ensured his fate.

?The process has consistently worked in both parties,? said Steve Schmidt, who helmed John McCain?s campaign four years ago. ?Nobody who is not prepared to be president of the United States has made it through this process. When you look at the field now, it has narrowed to two people who are unquestionably qualified to be president ? and all the people who are likely to be on next season?s ?Dancing with the Stars? have fallen away.?

For all the talk about how much the tea party-infused Republican Party of 2011 wants a leader from beyond the political establishment, most Republican primary voters appear focused on only one objective in determining the nominee: who can beat Obama.

And there?s an important distinction between making a statement about party purity in a downballot contest and picking a president.

?In 2010, it was fun to be an anti-establishment Republican and make a point by rallying around unelectable candidates like Christine O?Donnell and Sharron Angle, but the stakes are higher and therefore electability does play much more of a factor,? said a GOP operative whose current post prevents him from speaking on the record. ?So while it is fun to flirt with a [Michele] Bachmann or Cain, voters are not going to send an unproven entity into the Obama wood-chipper.?

Rick Santorum, Buoyed by Palin's Remarks, Campaigns in New Hampshire (ContributorNetwork)

BEDFORD, N.H. -- Rick Santorum, the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania who is running for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, made a campaign swing through southern New Hampshire. Santorum met with staffers and supporters at his Bedford headquarters on Friday, Dec. 2, before going on to visit Nashua later that night. He also campaigned in Nashua on Saturday.

The Bedford event was attended by about 30 supporters. There was a Christmas theme as attendees were asked to bring Christmas presents to support the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots campaign. Some supporters brought their children, and the presence of the youngsters helped make the event festive and upbeat, despite Santorum's lagging in the polls.

Support from Sarah Palin

Santorum was upbeat, buoyed by supportive remarks recently made by Sarah Palin on Sean Hannity's Fox News show. Palin intimated that voters looking for a true conservative with a consistent record may wind up supporting Santorum.

Newsmax quoted Palin as telling Hannity, "If voters start kind of shifting gears and deciding they want ideological consistency, then they're going to start paying attention to say, Rick Santorum."

Palin told Hannity that she was not officially endorsing Santorum, quipping that her "personal endorsement probably doesn't amount to a hill of beans at this point in the race."

Focus on Iowa

Senator Santorum told the Bedford quorum that he was focusing his efforts on Iowa, where he was successfully recruiting caucus "captains", key figures in Iowa's electoral process. Santorum promised his supporters he was going to do well in Iowa and then ride a wave of support back to New Hampshire.

It's the same strategy that Mike Huckabee used, who also was not polling well until he won the Iowa caucuses. A deeply religious conservative like Santorum, Huckabee built on the support of evangelical Christians to propel his candidacy.

According to Politico, Santorum's New Hampshire field director is Nick Pappas, who worked on Huckabee's 2008 campaign. Santorum's national political director, Michael Biundo, another Granite Stater, oversaw Pat Buchanan's victory in the 1996 New Hampshire primary.

Evangelical Support

Santorum proudly told the crowd he had picked up the endorsement of evangelical pastor Cary K. Gordon of Sioux City, Iowa, president of the PeaceMakers Institute. A power in the Hawkeye State, Gordon spearheaded the campaign that defeated three Iowa Supreme Court judges who had voted for same-sex marriage.

A staunch Catholic, Santorum is a hardliner on the issue of gay marriage, which he opposes.

During the question and answer session, I mentioned to Santorum that Newt Gingrich had anointed himself the Republican nominee, which he responded to with a laugh. Citing the fact that Iowa evangelicals are upset with Republican politician Bob Vander Plaats, the head of a coalition of conservative activists called The FAMILY Leader, for his ties to the thrice-married, twice-divorced, admitted serial adulterer Newt Gingrich, I asked whether he thought evangelicals would get behind Gingrich as a presidential candidate.

Santorum told me that he had the word that The FAMILY Leader would not endorse Gingrich. After several more questions, the Senator schmoozed with his supporters over pizza before hitting the road for Nashua.

It was a relaxed and upbeat event headlined by a confident candidate who has embraced the strategy of running as a dark horse.
