Pace of shadow inventory becomes real estate's top story - The ...

'); $("#content-tool-box-"+tool_name).jqm({trigger:this,overlay:20}); } }); });

?

Marty Linsky, a faculty member at the Harvard University?s Kennedy School of Government and co-author of the book ?Leadership on the Line,? has popularized a line about how much consumers can handle in their day-to-day?lives:

?Leadership is the art of disappointing your people at a rate they can?absorb.?

That?s because when you are pushing against what people expect, they can only absorb so much. If it?s a win-win situation, then it?s a sign that nothing important is at stake. Leadership is about the distribution of?losses.

Given the turmoil in the mortgage markets the past several years, lenders in this country should never be confused as being ?leaders.? However, the rate at which they have been doling out foreclosures and other distressed properties has made sense and has had a lot to do ? perhaps more than other single component ? with rising home prices in many?areas.

The flow of foreclosures to the market coupled with the managing of the absorption rate is the residential real estate story of the year for?2012.

Why?

Had the infamous ?shadow inventory? of distressed homes been dumped on the market all at once, many neighborhoods would still be reeling ? not only from a poorly maintained inventory of homes but also from a larger number of sellers-in-waiting who are current on their loans yet wanting to sell for a figure higher than their purchase?price.

Shadow inventory is defined differently by different organizations. It often refers to homes with mortgages at least 60 days late, homes already in foreclosure, or homes owned by the bank but not yet on the market. This number decreased by 1.2 million properties in the first six months of 2012, according to a study by JPMorgan Chase. That leaves about 5 million homes still in the shadow category. Totals are not in for the second half of the?year.

Chase said the clearance of properties was the result of a combination of factors: fewer homes foreclosed on by the banks, more short sales completed, and more loan modifications?approved.

With workout solutions fairly systematic at most major banks and with more homebuyers in the market, researchers expect the second half of 2012 to be as healing as the first, doubling the number of homes removed from shadow status by the end of the?year.

The most current indicator was the October ?first look? into mortgage statistics from Lender Processing Services. The company reported that delinquency rates were down but the number of properties that were 30 or more days delinquent or in foreclosure totaled 5.3?million.

Two major incidents have analysts scrutinizing the flow of foreclosures to the market more than ever: the detrimental effects of a possible ?fiscal cliff? and the upward revision of shadow inventory by a California research firm specializing in distressed?properties.

At press time, there was little clarity about how our representatives in Washington, D.C., planned to handle the fiscal cliff, the term given to the challenges brought by the implementation of the Budget Control Act of 2011. The impact could be positive or negative, depending on how government spending reductions and tax cut expirations are handled. The goal is to lower the national debt by $7.1 trillion over the next?decade.

Some analysts believe that if lawmakers take a restrained approach ? extending the residential mortgage interest deduction and most tax cuts ? the impact on housing would be positive. However, other observers believe if lawmakers charge hard and push everything over the edge at the same time ? including the once-untouchable mortgage interest deduction ? the economy could falter and the housing market could?suffer.

That would mean more foreclosures, additional shadow inventory, and more would-be sellers waiting for things to calm down. Some may not want to wait ? again. The last thing we need is another set of sellers tossing house keys to their?lender.

Economic environment during infancy linked with substance use, delinquent behavior in adolescence

Dec. 31, 2012 ? The larger economic environment during infancy may be associated with subsequent substance use and delinquent behavior during adolescence, according to a report published Online First by Archives of General Psychiatry, a JAMA Network publication.

The current economic crisis has received much attention from policy makers, although the focus has been on short-term effects, while the long-term influences of such financial crises, especially on young children, have generally not been examined, according to the study background.

Seethalakshmi Ramanathan, M.B.B.S., D.P.M., of the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, and colleagues examined the relationship between the high unemployment rates during and after the 1980 and 1981-1982 recession, and rates of subsequent adolescent substance use and delinquent behaviors. Researchers used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, which included a group of 8,984 adolescents born from January 1, 1980 through December 31, 1984.

"The results demonstrate a strong correlation between the unemployment rate during infancy and subsequent behavioral problems. This finding suggests that unfavorable economic conditions during infancy may create circumstances that can affect the psychological development of the infant and lead to the development of behavioral problems in adolescence," the authors note.

According to the study results, exposure to a 1 percent deviation from mean regional unemployment rates at the age of 1 year was associated with an increase in the odds ratios of engaging in marijuana use (1.09), smoking (1.07), alcohol use (1.06), arrest (1.17), gang affiliation (1.09), and petty (1.06) and major theft (1.11). No significant associations were noted with the use of hard drugs and assaultive behavior, the results indicate.

"Although the past does not necessarily predict the future, it provides important lessons. Our findings suggest an important static risk factor that mental health professionals may want to take into account when dealing with children exposed to the current economic crisis," the authors conclude. "We hope that the study inspires mental health professionals to look for potential causes and explore interventions that can mitigate some of these long-term consequences."

Best of 2012: Buena Male Athlete, Female Athlete and Coach of the year

Buena head football coach, Ryan Scherling, center, is our pick for top coach of 2012, and is flanked by male athlete of the year, Buena junior running back Dominique Drake to his right, and Arizona State University thrower Ashley Weber, our female athlete of the year. (Beatrice Richardson?Herald/Review)

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friend

SIERRA VISTA ? Ryan Scherling would have been an easy choice for Herald/Review Coach of the Year for 2012 for no other reason than in his first year, the 27-year-old from Kansas City led the Buena High School football team to its first state playoff appearance in 19?years.

It would have been almost as easy to make his case based on the sheer marketing determination, confidence and know-how he used to bring back community and commercial?enthusiasm.

But perhaps the best argument for Scherling as Coach of the Year, was his commitment to making it all work his?way.?

Upon arriving in April, Scherling promised to implement a wide-open offense he dubbed ?Spread Coast.? At the time, he really had no idea whether he had the horses to make a formation with four, and sometimes five receivers coming back from a senior-laden team a year earlier that won just three games with a simpler?offense.

?It?s kind of a cool offense that can do a lot of different things and I think we showed that,? Scherling?said.?

?It was going to have to adapt to our personnel, but I knew this place had athletic personnel, and I?m looking for even better things last?year.?

The Colts went 8-3 on the season, riding a six-game winning streak to reach state after starting?2-2.

?The high point of the season for me was making the playoffs,? Scherling?said.?

?Once we beat Sunnyside and we knew we were in ? it was a night you?ll never?forget.?

Along the way, Scherling?s offense smashed most of the school?s single-season?records.?

Junior quarterback Rafael Adames set records in passing yardage and touchdown passes that had stood for more than 25 years, but the biggest numbers were put up by junior running back Dominique
?Drake.?

Drake rushed for 2,105 yards and 28 touchdowns ? both school records ? doing it all with just five interior linemen and no blocking back in front of?him.

Drake arrived at Buena from Maryland in late July, and if he hadn?t shown up, it?s doubtful Scherling?s debut season as a head coach would have been nearly as
?successful.

?It was pretty amazing that I broke the record,? said Drake, our runaway choice for 2012 Herald/Review Male Athlete of the?Year.?

?I want to just come out next year and break that?record.?

Drake said that when he first showed up at Buena, he couldn?t have imagined the kind of personal and team success he?d?have.

?When I first came out here, everybody was playing around and not very focused,? Drake?said.?

?But by the end of the year, we were pretty?tough.?

2013 figures to be even more promising for the Colts, who return virtually all of their skill players on offense, and get the benefit of moving down from Division I to Division II, meaning they?ll no longer have to compete in state against teams like Mesa Red Mountain, which delivered the Colts a 45-6 loss in the first round of state. ?I think we have a good team coming back; our goal is to compete for a championship,? Scherling
?said.?

?I want even more excitement. I want our numbers to increase at all levels, and with success, I think those numbers will go up. Success breeds competition within our?program.?

Ashley?Weber

Our choice for Female Athlete of the Year is once again a repeat winner. Buena?s Bora Leonard took our top spot in 2009 and 2010, and for the second straight year, Buena thrower Ashley Weber is our pick for No. 1 after closing out her high school career with dual state championships in the shot put and the?discus.

In May, Weber won the Division I state title at Mesa Community College in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 9 1/2 inches, and followed that up by taking gold in the discus with a heave of 133 feet, 3 inches. In July, Weber nearly defended her national title in the hammer throw, finishing second at 159 feet at Junior Nationals in Maryland, and finishing fourth in the shot put at 45 feet, 2 1/2?inches.

She signed with Arizona State University and is currently a redshirt freshman on the Sun Devils??squad.

?I?m learning a lot, working on things and getting stronger,? Weber said. ?I?m kind of a hammer specialist now. I?m practicing weights and shots for the indoor season, but it?s nice this season to not have a lot of pressure, and taking time to learn as much as I?can.?

In the hammer, the Sun Devils currently feature fifth-year senior Chelsea Cassulo, leaving the door open for Weber to take the top spot next?season.

?I might be the primary hammer thrower. There?s a walk-on who?s showing a lot of talent, too, so it will be fun to see how it all works out,? Weber said. ?I?m spending this season getting stronger and learning things, next year we?ll see how things wind up, and by my fifth year, who?knows??

Change Your Relationship with Credit to Boost Your Credit Score

Change Your Relationship with Credit to Boost Your Credit Score Your credit score is a pretty meaningful number, and can determine whether you get the best interest rates when you finance a car or a home, or get turned away entirely. A recent FICO report explains the key to a better score is a combination of good financial habits and an understanding that credit is a tool to be used for a specific purpose?not something to be feared or worried about, but a tool to improve your financial situation.

Make no mistake, if you ask someone with a credit score over 800, they'll explain their good financial habits first. US News interviewed one person who improved his score in 18 months by financing an auto loan, opened revolving credit accounts, and doing what anyone should do: Pay the loan every month, focus spending on the credit cards and pay off half or more of the balances every month. At the same time though, the report explains that what you'll also find an upbeat mindset about credit in almost everyone with a high credit score:

John Ulzheimer, president of consumer education at SmartCredit.com and a former FICO employee, says high scorers approach credit differently than mid- and low-range scorers. For starters, they're not intimidated by it. "They look at credit more as something that's under their control, versus something that's controlling them," he says. "That's how credit should be used, rather than to keep up with the Joneses."

Transforming your relationship and mindset about credit is the first step towards building better financial habits. For example, using it to supplement your lifestyle or to buy things you can't normally afford is right out. The FICO report also noted some other behaviors of high score-holders worth noting: namely that on average they use about 7 percent of their revolving credit, their oldest account is about 25 years old, and they have an average of seven credit cards (including both open and closed credit accounts.)

The same report also notes that credit scores change monthly, and those healthy habits are more important than a high number, so don't obsess over the 800 number?it's more important to do what it takes to get there than get there. Hit the link below to read the full report.

Egypt's leader sees currency stabilising "within days"

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's pound fell to a record low on Monday as the president signalled his government would allow it to depreciate slowly for several more days to stop a drain on foreign reserves that has driven the economy into crisis since the fall of Hosni Mubarak.

Hit by a new bout of political turmoil in the last month, the pound had weakened to a record low on Sunday at a new dollar auction brought in by the central bank. It fell further at a second auction on Monday, last trading at 6.37 to the dollar on the interbank market.

The drop means the central bank has allowed the pound to slide by almost 3 percent over the last two days after limiting its decline to only 6 percent since the uprising that removed Mubarak from power almost two years ago.

The pound's fall, which is certain to increase the price of imported staples such as tea and sugar, underlines the economic crisis facing President Mohamed Mursi as his administration tries to contain the political fall-out of his move to fast-track a contentious new constitution passed into law last week.

Egyptians panicked by street clashes between Mursi's Islamist backers and his more secular-minded opponents on the streets of Cairo and other cities have rushed to change their pounds into dollars in recent weeks, fearing it would be devalued further.

"The market will return to stability," Mursi told Arab journalists on Sunday evening, the state news agency MENA reported.

The pound's fall "does not worry or scare us, and within days matters will balance out," he said.

Having just sold their last dollar bills, dealers at one Cairo foreign exchange bureau did not bother changing their price board when the new low appeared on their trading screens.

"He took our last dollars," said one of the traders, pointing to a man walking out of the door.

Outside, another man told a friend his dollar hunt had failed. "They have no dollars. What can I do?" he said by mobile phone. "I went to many dealers and could not find dollars."

The fall has been driven mainly by ordinary citizens who have been trying to turn their savings into foreign currency, worried that the pound will weaken further because of the latest political turmoil.

The crisis wiped 10 percent off the value of Egyptian stocks when it erupted in late November. But the main index has mostly recovered since then, climbing in the two sessions since the introduction of the new foreign currency system.

Market participants attribute the rise to buying by Arab and international investors using the cheaper pound to bargain hunt.

FREE FLOATING POUND

The auctions are part of a shift announced on Saturday and designed to conserve foreign reserves, which the bank says are now at "critical" levels that cover just three months of the food, fuel and other goods Egypt imports.

Bankers have described the new system as a move towards establishing a free market value for the pound, which has been tightly controlled since a managed devaluation which ended in 2004.

The head of the Egyptian banking federation said the new system was an "important first step" towards a free float.

In remarks to MENA, Tarek Amer, who is also chairman of Egypt's largest bank, state-owned National Bank of Egypt, said the new system was a success on its first day and had "significantly reduced" demand for dollars.

The central bank has sold about $75 million at each of Sunday's and Monday's auctions.

The run on the pound prompted officials last week to impose controls on how much cash could be physically carried out of the country. Security men at one Cairo bank branch had to remove one customer angered by a $10,000 limit on how much currency he could withdraw, witnesses said.

The changes announced on Saturday include regular foreign currency auctions and also limit how much foreign currency companies can withdraw at a time.

The central bank had spent more than $20 billion - or more than half of its reserves - over the past two years to defend the currency. The reserves fell by a further $448 million in November to about $15 billion.

Prices of imports have already started to rise. Pyramid Oil Field, a firm that imports chemicals for use in water treatment and oil fields, had put up its prices by 10 to 15 percent last week, fearing a further weakening of the pound.

"This instability obliges you to increase the price, to have a safety factor," said Ashraf el-Gamal, president and managing director of the company, told Reuters. "From now on, the contracts will be of a very short validity."

To be on the safe side, he was projecting that the pound would weaken to stand at 9 against the euro, compared to a previous level of 8.

ECONOMY FRAGILE

Prime Minister Hisham Kandil said on Sunday that the economy was in "a very difficult and fragile" situation, adding that he expected talks with the International Monetary Fund on a $4.8 billion loan to resume in January.

Egypt won preliminary approval in November from the IMF for the loan, but delayed seeking final approval until January after it suspended a series of tax increases to allow more time to explain a heavily criticized package of economic austerity measures to the public.

Kandil's efforts to revive the economy have been hit by the latest turmoil, which scared off tourists who had begun to return. On the eve of the anti-Mubarak revolt, Egypt's tourism industry accounted for one in eight jobs.

Mursi hoped that the passage of a new constitution would stabilise Egypt's politics, giving him space to implement economic reforms and attract investment. The constitution, written by Mursi's Islamist allies, was approved in a popular referendum in December.

But it remains the focus of controversy, and the opposition is likely to seize upon austerity measures demanded under an IMF deal as a stick to beat the Muslim Brotherhood ahead of a parliamentary vote expected in early 2013.

Two-fifths of Egypt's 84 million population live around the poverty line and depend on subsidies that are straining the treasury.

Gamal of Pyramid Oil Field said he knew of at least three foreign companies that were hesitant to make large investments in the country because of the instability.

"They are feeling insecure because of everything that is happening," he said. "One is looking to invest billions."

Stocks fall again with 'fiscal cliff' closing in

Stocks?tumbled for a fifth day as a 'fiscal cliff' deal goes unfulfilled in Washington.?Despite the fiscal gridlock in Washington, major stock indexes are holding on to gains for the year.

The five-day losing streak for the Dow Jones industrial average was the longest since July.

The Dow dropped 158.20 points, or 1.2 percent, to 12,938.11 points, with losses accelerating in the last 20 minutes of trading as reports circulated that President Barack Obama would not be making a new budget proposal in a meeting with congressional leaders.

The Standard & Poor 500 index fell 15.67 points, or 1.1 percent, to 1,402.43, its longest losing streak in three months, and the Nasdaq dropped 25.59 points, or 0.9 percent, to 2,960.31.

"The reality, late in the day, is that a deal is just not going to get done," said Ryan Detrick, a senior technical strategist at Schaeffer Investment Research. "We could be greeted by a big sell-off at the start of January."

President Barack Obama returned from a Christmas break in Hawaii to meet with congressional leaders at the White House to try thrash out the terms of a deal that would prevent across-the-board tax increases for millions of Americans as well as simultaneous government spending cuts beginning Jan. 1. Those measures, if implemented, could push the economy back into recession, economists say.

Stocks?closed lower Thursday but erased most of an early loss after Republicans said they would reconvene the House of Representatives Sunday in hopes of piecing together a last-minute budget deal.

Traders have been focusing on Washington, and the budget negotiations, since the Nov. 6 presidential election returned a divided government to power.

"I can't wait till this is done, so we can start talking about markets again and not just about politics," said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management. Cote doesn't expect lawmakers will manage to reach a deal before the deadline and says that when people assess the extent of tax increases on the way, "the market is going reel."

Cote also expects slowing earnings growth to hit?stocks.

Despite the fiscal gridlock in Washington, major?stock?indexes are holding on to gains for the year. The Dow is up 5.9 percent, the S&P 500 index is 11.5 percent higher and the Nasdaq is up 13.6 percent.

Stocks?rose in 2012 on optimism that a housing market recovery, coupled with an improving job market, will support economic growth. The Federal Reserve has also extended its bond purchasing program, which is intended to lower borrowing costs and encourage spending and investment.

Stocks?declined despite reports that suggested the outlook for the economy is improving.

A measure of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes increased last month to its highest level in two and a half years, the latest sign of improvement in the once-battered housing market. The National Association of Realtors said Friday that its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index rose to its highest since April 2010.

The Institute of Supply Management's Chicago-area purchasing managers index for December came in at 51.6, beating estimates for a gain to 51.

Bond prices rose as investors moved money into defensive investments. The yield on the benchmark rise 10-year Treasury note, which falls when bond prices rise, dropped to 1.70 percent from 1.75 percent late Thursday.

Among?stocks?making moves:

Hewlett-Packard fell 36 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $13.68 after the computer and printer maker said the Department of Justice is investigating H-P's business software unit Autonomy. H-P bought Autonomy for $10 billion in 2011 and has accused the company's former management of fudging its accounting before the acquisition. H-P has lost almost half its market value this year, making it the biggest decliner among the 30stocks?in the Dow average.

Barnes and Noble rose 62 cents, or 4.3 percent, to $14.97 after the U.K. publishing and education company Pearson said it is making an $89.5 million investment in the company's Nook Media division, as the two companies look to make a bigger digital push into the education sector.

Chinese document shows Japan owns islands

Big News Network.com Sunday 30th December, 2012

A Chinese official document has been found which states Japan is the owner of a group of islands in the East China Sea, to which Beijing has also laid claim.

The Japan Times newspaper has released a copy of the document which describes the disputed islands as part of the Ryukyu Islands, today known as Okinawa.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry document also to the islands by their Japanese name Senkakus, part of the Ryukyu chain.

The document was completed in May 1970, in the months following the foundation of the People's Republic of China.

Japanese scholars have described the document as evidence that China regarded the Senkaku Islands as part of the Ryukyus and not part of Taiwan, which has been a long held Chinese claim.

Japan and China have been in a long dispute over the sovereignty of the islands, which contain oil, minerals and fish.

Japan announced in September that it planned to buy the islands from Japanese private owners.

Chinese people held anti-Japan demonstrations following the announcement.

Military projects and nanotechnology push boundaries of flexible electronics in imaging technologies

Posted: Dec 29th, 2012 (Nanowerk News) Aiming to address the strategic military need for accurate, high-resolution imaging, a University of Wisconsin-Madison electrical and computer engineer working with the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the U.S. Department of Defense has a simple goal: to make night vision more accurate and easier for soldiers and pilots to use. Professor Jack Ma
    Jack Ma
Through some key breakthroughs in flexible semiconductors, electrical and computer engineering Professor Zhenqiang "Jack" Ma has created two imaging technologies that have potential applications beyond the 21st century battlefield.

With $750,000 in support from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Ma has developed curved night-vision goggles using germanium nanomembranes.

Creating night-vision goggles with a curved surface allows a wider field of view for pilots, but requires highly photosensitive materials with mechanical bendability-the silicon used in conventional image sensors doesn't cut it.

Instead, Ma's design employs flexible germanium nanomembranes: a transferrable flexible semiconductor that until now has been too challenging to use in imagers due to a high dark current, the background electrical current that flows through photosensitive materials even when they aren't exposed to light.

"Because of their higher dark current, the image often comes up much noisier on germanium-based imagers," says Ma. "We solved that problem." Ma's dark current reduction technology has also been recently licensed to Intel. In another imaging project, the U.S. Department of Defense has provided Ma with $750,000 in support of development of imagers for military surveillance that span multiple spectra, combining infrared and visible light into a single image. "The reason they are interested in IR is because visible light can be blocked by clouds, dust, smoke," says Ma. "IR can go through, so simultaneous visible and IR imaging allows them to see everything." Inexpensive silicon makes production of visible light imagers a simple task, but IR relies on materials incompatible with silicon. The current approach involves a sensor for IR images and a sensor for visible light, combining the two images in post-processing, which requires greater computing power and hardware complexity. Instead, Ma will employ a heterogeneous semiconductor nanomembrane, stacking the two incompatible materials in each pixel of the new imager to layer IR and visible images on top of one another in a single image. The result will be imagers that can seamlessly shift between IR and visible images, allowing the picture to be richer and more quickly utilized for strategic decisionmaking. "They are looking for the highest resolution they can get," says Ma. "Something that can take one picture with everything in it."

Couples wed as gay marriage comes to Maine

    Robert F. Bukaty / AP

Steven Bridges, left, receives a wedding ring from Michael Snell, early Saturday at City Hall in Portland, Maine.

    By NBC News wire services

PORTLAND, Maine - Gay and lesbian couples exchanged their vows early Saturday as Maine's new same-sex marriage law took effect a minute after midnight.

Among them were Steven Bridges and Michael Snell, who held a commitment ceremony six years ago but wanted to make their marriage official under state law.

"It's historic. We've waited our entire lives for this," said Bridges, a retail manager, who's been in a relationship with the Snell, a massage therapist, for nine years. Bridges, 42, and Snell, 53, wore lavender and purple carnations on black T-shirts with the words "Love is love."

With Snell's two adult daughters looking on, they exchanged their vows in the city clerk's office after getting the first marriage license issued to a same-sex couple in Portland. They said they'll hold another ceremony with friends this summer, after the weather warms up.

Voters approved gay marriage in November, making Maine and two other states the first to do so by popular vote. A law is already in effect in Washington state; Maryland's takes effect Tuesday.?

Nine of the 50 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia, have now legalized gay marriage. Another 31 states have passed constitutional amendments banning it.

In Portland, a half dozen couples huddled with friends and family in freezing temperatures outside the building before the doors to the city clerk's office were opened at 10 p.m. local time.

"We've been together for 30 years, and never thought that this country would allow marriages between gay couples," said Roberta Batt, 71, an antiques dealer and retired physician with silver hair and round eyeglasses. She planned to marry her longtime partner, Mary, who stood nearby.

"We're just very thankful to the people of Maine, and I hope the rest of the country goes the way this state has," she added.

Suzanne Blackburn and Joanie Kunian, of Portland, were among those in line to get their license at midnight, but they didn't plan to wed immediately. One of their grandchildren wanted them to get married on Valentine's Day.

"I don't think that we dared to dream too big until we had the governor's signature," Blackburn said. "That's why it's so important, because it feels real."

In Bangor, the city clerk's office was planning to be open on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. for residents to obtain marriage licenses. The Brunswick town clerk's office was set to be open from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday by appointment. As of midday on Friday, five same-sex couples had booked appointments, the office said.

Sarah Dowling, left, speaks Nov. 1 at a gay marriage rally, accompanied by her partner of 18 years, Linda Wolfe, and their daughter, Maya Dowling-Wolfe, in Portland, Maine. Dowling and Wolfe planned to marry after a law allowing same-sex marriage took effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

More lavish same-sex weddings are being booked starting in the spring at the On the Marsh Bistro in Kennebunk, said owner Denise Rubin.

"We support it wholeheartedly," she said. "We look forward to being part of a whole new wave of wonderful thinking."

The tide of public opinion has been shifting in favor of allowing same-sex marriage. In May, President Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to say he believed same-sex couples should be allowed to get married.

A Pew Research Center survey from October found 49 percent of Americans favored allowing gay marriage, with 40 percent opposed. The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to review two challenges to federal and state laws that define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Just a day after Washington became the latest state to allow gay couples to marry, the U.S. Supreme Court will take a serious look at same-sex marriage for the first time ever. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

The nation's highest court said this month it will review a case against a federal law that denies married same-sex couples the federal benefits that heterosexual couples receive. It also will look at a challenge to California's ban on gay marriage, known as Proposition 8, which voters narrowly approved in 2008.

Washington state's law legalizing same-sex unions took effect on Sunday, December 9, and Maryland's law takes effect on January 1, 2013.

Sports minister slams CIS League project

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko watches the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Sochi (RIA Novosti / Vladimir Pesnya)

The discussed project of a new football league which would unite the top clubs from the former Soviet States is a false goal, believes Russia?s Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko.

??We see that the popularity of football [in Russia] is decreasing, and without proper events to promote this sport the interest towards it can be quickly lost,? Mutko told Rossiya 2 channel. ?But instead of development, we see false goal being set. And the CIS Championships is surely one of those."

The idea of recreating a championship of Soviet Union was raised by Gazprom boss Aleksey Miller, and received backing from CSKA Moscow President Evgeny Giner and Anzhi CEO, Konstantin Remchukov.

"Nobody has the right to organize a hobnob,? the official stressed. ?If this championship will receive they status of commercial event, then let them play as they want, finding dates outside the official calendar. But no national federation would ever agree to give quotas in European events to such a tournament.?

The authors of CIS League project believe it?ll take them one-and-a-half years to prepare everything for the championship?s maiden season.

Meanwhile, clubs from Georgia and Azerbaijan have already stated that they have no interest of playing in the same league with their former Soviet neighbors.
