Eat Worms for Better Health?

Edward C. Geehr, M.D., Lifescript Chief Medical officer

We have trillions of bacteria in and on our body ? and they?re actually good for us. The bugs in our gut help with digestion. Those on our skin maintain a healthy balance that helps to shield against destructive bacterial interlopers.

But parasites are another matter. Until now, no known parasite has been thought to be good for our health. Now, researchers have discovered the beneficial potential of a pig parasite called the whipworm.

Parasites may help with the rising incidence of autoimmune diseases such as Crohn?s disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis in the developed world. Same goes for other immune-based disorders, such as asthma, which increased in children by 28% between 1999 and 2009.

These types of immune-mediated diseases remain rare in less-developed countries. Environmental changes may be the reason. While some researchers blame various chemicals found in the environment, many scientists think it may be hygiene.

Essentially, our environment has become too clean, they claim. One of the most significant immunologic changes is the virtual eradication of intestinal parasites.

In agrarian cultures, people are constantly exposed to bacteria and parasites. Over one-third of the world?s population has intestinal parasites. Routine exposure to pathogens in our environment helps to regulate the immune system, according to the hygiene hypothesis. In the case of asthma, the immune system reacts abnormally to certain naturally occurring allergens, such as animal dander, plant pollens and fungal spores.

Migration to the cities and suburbs in the developed world decreased intestinal infections. Without ?training? of the immune system by exposure to various bacteria and parasites during childhood, the immune system can be inclined to over-react or become misdirected.

Even worse, in autoimmune disorders, the immune system perceives your own cells as foreign material and attacks, leading to organ system destruction and failure.? Multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, Crohn?s and rheumatoid arthritis are all examples of the immune system turned against the person?s own cells, attacking and destroying important tissues.

Numerous animal studies supported the notion that exposure to parasites could prevent some of these devastating auto-immune disorders. The studies suggested that exposure to parasites may prevent or treat human disease.

Based on these observations, University of Iowa researchers found a safe parasite to test in humans.? They selected a pig whipworm, whose eggs can hatch in the human intestine, but cause no disease.? In other words, it might trigger the desired ?reset? of the immune system without itself posing any risk of infection.

Early trials consisting of oral administration of a concoction of 2,500 microscopic whipworm eggs in a liquid slurry every other weeks for 24 weeks have shown that they?re not only safe but appear to lessen the symptoms of both Crohn?s disease and ulcerative colitis. Follow-up trials are being conducted.

Another area of interest is in multiple sclerosis. One human trial published in the Multiple Sclerosis Journal, showed brain lesions decreased in four of five patients three months into treatment, and rebounded two months after it ended.

So it appears that parasitic therapy helps to rebalance the immune system. Ongoing trials should help to further define the effectiveness of the treatment across a number of immune-system disorders.

Would you eat worms for better health??

The Crucible ? NYC and The Department of Education's Mass ...

Public Shame and the Mass Hysteria that Follows

Martha Corey: I, sir, am innocent to a witch. I know not what a witch is.
Judge Hathorne: If you know not what a witch is, how do you know you are not one?

?~ ?The Crucible, IMDb quotes

The activities of McCarthy and his followers gave birth to the term McCarthyism.

This term is used in reference to ?sensational and highly publicized personal attacks, usually based on unsubstantiated charges, as a means of discrediting people thought to be subversive.?(Grolier, 1996)

?In the 1950?s, ?mass hysteria swept the country through McCarthyism. ?Arthur Miller wrote ?The Crucible?, linking the Salem witch hunts to this mass hysteria.

This week, Bill Gates deserves the ?Pants on Fire Award? ?for his PROPAGANDA performance in his recent Op Ed, Shame is Not the Solution/. ??Gates had this published in the New York Times, claiming to be concerned about the shame teachers may feel about having their rankings published for all to see.

Question: ?But how is this related to mass hysteria? ?What is the history of mass hysteria in the United States?

?Steven Stein, on February 28, 2011, ?wrote in his blog?Blame It on Steinski: ?A few examples of mass hysteria in US history (and a new addition)

?A few months ago, a friend asked me my opinion as to how the right-wing craziness we?re witnessing in this country came about. Unfortunately, I couldn?t marshal a coherent response at the time, and fell back into pounding on the table, hollering and cursing. It bothered me that I didn?t give him a decent rundown of what I consider the history of mob madness in the US, and I?ve finally gathered a few examples of a true American tradition ? Fear of ?The Other.? ~ Steven Stein

?Stein goes on to list 6 incidents of mass hysteria in American history: ?

1)The Salem Witch Trials?(1600s) ? ?An American?Inquisition, which prepared the way for many movements that came after.?

2)?Lynching in the United States?(1860 ? 1960) ? ?All governments ? state or federal ? and their agencies (like the cops) simply ignored this. You could buy picture postcards from proud local merchants of notable area lynchings.?

3)The Red Scare?and? The Palmer Raids?(first 1919 ? 1920) ? ?The Palmer raids were essentially the illegal kidnapping and deportation of any ?radicals? (i.e.; labor and union leaders) who appeared on a list compiled by the US Attorney General.?

4)Japanese American internment?during WWII (1942) ? ?Without trial, these people had their businesses confiscated and their homes stolen (permanently) while they were moved to godforsaken settlements hundreds or? thousands of miles away from their homes.?

5)?The Second Red Scare (1940?s ? 1950?s) ??McCarthyism, Joe McCarthy, and the?blacklist?? ?One of the truly wild (and modern) forms of manufactured political hysteria (see what I?m getting at?) was the rise of an alcoholic Senator named Joseph McCarthy after the end of WWII.??

6)Satanic Day Care Scandals?(1980?s) ? ?Was there satanic abuse? Hell no. Almost all of the people accused were acquitted, and successfully sued their accusers for millions of dollars in damages and settlements. But the newspapers and TV networks reported this garbage with straight faces, in the same ?he said ? she said? fashion they report any accusation today.?

# 7 becomes The Teacher Witch Hunts:

Gates? notorious partner,?Rupert Murdoch?and his writer, Georgett Roberts took it too far on February 26, 2012 when they used the?Scarlet Letter ?F??for failure as they??branded one teacher as??The Worst in Queens??in his rag,?The New York Post.

Here is Murdoch?s New York Post piece,

written by Georgett Roberts, ?

that sets out to begin the national teacher witch hunt!

The city?s worst teacher has parents at her Queens school looking for a different classroom for their children.

Pascale Mauclair, a tenured $75,000-a-year educator at PS 11 in Woodside, ranked among the very bottom out of more than 12,000 fourth- through eighth-grade math and English teachers citywide.

?I need to speak to the guidance counselor and switch my daughter to another class or change the teacher,? said Md Haque, 42.

?Every parent expects their children to grow up smart, and it takes a competent teacher for that to happen.

?My next duty is to find out from the guidance counselor what is going on with this teacher.?

Pascale Mauclai

DATABASE: PERFORMANCE GRADES FOR NYC PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS (ORGANIZED BY SCHOOL)

?Another parent whose son graduated last spring from the same school was outraged that Mauclair cannot be fired for low ratings.

?I think she should be out,? said Rosa Bivar 41. ?Let her go, and take the money, her salary and give it back to the school ? they need the money.?

Teachers have been silenced as their union, United Federation of Teachers brought suit and lost an appeal when fighting against the publication of the teacher rankings.

Meanwhile, Arne Duncan, our nation?s US Secretary of Education ?sets the stage for a National Teacher Witch Hunt as he praised the effort, saying ?Silence is not an option.? ?

?In releasing the reports, New York became only the second city in the country where teachers? names and ratings have been publicized. In 2010, The Los Angeles Times hired a statistician and published?its own set of ratings, in spite of fierce opposition from the local teachers? union. Many thousands of people visited the newspaper?s Web site to check the rankings, though, and Arne Duncan, the federal education secretary, praised the effort, saying, ?Silence is not an option.? ~ ?by Fernanda Santos and Robert Gebeloff, Teacher Quality Widely Diffused, Ratings Indicate, ?New York Times?

Question: Who is behind the reports and publication of teacher?s names? ?Where does the data come?from?

Answer: ?- ?Bill Gates, Rupert Murdoch, Mayor Bloomberg, and Joel Klein, with the blessings of Arne Duncan and Barack Obama! ?

?This week, the?Wall Street Journal?reported that the NY Board of Regents approved the state?s sharing of student and teacher information with a new national database, to be funded by the Gates?Foundation, and designed by News Corp?s Wireless Generation. Other states that have already agreed to share this data,?according to?the NY State Education Department, include Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, Louisiana and Massachusetts.

All this confidential student and teacher data will be held by a private limited corporation, called the?Shared Learning Collaborative LLC, with even less accountability, ?which in July wasawarded?$76.5 million by the Gates Foundation, to be spent over 7 months. According to an earlier NYT story,??$44 million?of this funding will go straight into the pockets of Wireless Generation, owned by Murdoch?s News Corp and run by Joel Klein.?? ~?Leonie Haimson,?Confidential Student and Teacher Data to be Provided to LLC Run by Gates and Murdoch

and?.

?The data came from a program launched in 2006 under then-schools Chancellor Joel Klein in New York?s continuing push for test-based accountability in schools. Since then, Mr. Klein has advocated to make the reports and teachers? names public.? ?~ Lisa Fleisher, Teacher Rankings Opened to View, The Wall Street Journal

and?the media, just like in all other ?mass hysteria? incidents plays the heavy role of spreading the hysteria.

The data was handed to the news media on CDs, which contain spreadsheets listing teachers? scores for the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years. Roughly 12,000 teachers were given teacher data reports each year.

Charter school and special education teachers were not included; the city says it will likely release their rankings on Tuesday.

The teacher rankings began as a pilot program four years ago to improve instruction in 140 city schools. It has turned into the most controversial set of public school statistics to be released by the Bloomberg administration:?individual rankings?for roughly 18,000 math and English public school teachers from fourth through eighth grades?.

SchoolBook?intends to publish the rankings?as part of a list of teachers at the affected city schools. ~ SchoolBook, City Teacher Data Reports Are Released??[Note:?SchoolBook?is a?subsidiary?of the?New York Times]?

Meanwhile, ?these teacher?s lives hang in the mass hysteria created by public humiliation.

Teachers, understandably, along with more than 600 parents so far, are outraged! ?Ben Chapmann and Tina Moore write in The New York Daily News, Teachers Call Release of Rankings a Witch Hunt, Inaccurate:

?Many parents, though, bristled at the rankings, with more than 600 signing a petition against their release.

Over and over, teachers questioned the accuracy of the reports, based on a formula that compares how students? standardized test scores with a predicted score based on income level, attendance and other factors .

Gary Malone, 38, of Whitestone, said his ranking dropped from the 88th to the 38th percentile between the 2008-09 and 2009-2010 school year.

The 11-year veteran whose score had a more than 30-point margin of error ? said he couldn?t fathom what could have caused such a precipitous drop.

?I don?t know what possibly could?ve happened to make me go down 50 percentage points,? said Malone, who teaches eighth-grade English at Junior High School 189 in Flushing. ?These ranking are inaccurate.

?I am a very hardworking teacher and I know that I am ?highly effective,? whether or not the random ranking I am assigned from year to year says the same.?

Elizabeth Phillips, the principal of P.S. 321, said she worries that the best teachers will leave the system because of the rankings, which she considers unfair.

?We have great teachers with very high scores, very low scores and middle scores,? she said. ?It is wrong to call a great teacher a failing teacher because a few kids got three or four questions wrong one year rather than two or three questions wrong the year before.?

Question: ?But now that this release of data and Teacher Witch Hunt has begun, what will teachers, administrators, parents, and children do about the mass hysteria? ?Are the masses REALLY going to believe the ?junk? THEY call data?

?The two most common elements in the world are hydrogen and stupidity.????Arthur Miller

So far, New York?s United Federation of Teachers has filled the inbox of ?UFT President, Michael Mulgrew, with emails of outrage.

?In the days leading up to the?release of ratings?for thousands of New York City public-school teachers on Friday, hundreds of e-mails poured into the in-box of Michael Mulgrew, president of the?United Federation of Teachers.

?Enough of cooperation,? one member of the union wrote to his leader. Others prodded Mr. Mulgrew to stand up against Mayor?Michael R. Bloomberg, describing him as ?untrustworthy,? in what he said was a call to arms of unparalleled intensity.

?How many times do we have to get kicked in the teeth before we realize we can?t work with these people?? John Elfrank-Dana, a union chapter leader at?Murry Bergtraum High School?in Lower Manhattan, asked during an interview, echoing what many of his fellow teachers have said in recent days on Twitter and on various blogs.? ~ Fernanda Santos and Anna M. Phillips, ?With Release of Teacher Data, Setback for Unions Turns Into a Rallying Cry, The New York Times

There are some other sane voices speaking out, such as education blogger Valerie Strauss,??The Answer Sheet, ?The Washington Post. ?She writes:

This is a quote?from a Feb. 16 release?from the New York State Department of Education announcing that agreement:

?Teachers rated ineffective on student performance based on objective assessments must be rated ineffective overall. Teachers who are developing or ineffective will get assistance and support to improve performance. Teachers who remain ineffective can be removed from classrooms;? (emphasis is mine)

As noted by education historian Diane Ravitch in her New York Review of Books?article titled ?No Student Left Untested,? the fact is that for some teachers, ?[t]he 40 percent allocated to student performance actually counts for 100 percent. Two years of ineffective ratings and the teacher is fired.? A teacher could have exemplary ratings for all other measures, but if the test scores are terrible, the teacher is rated terrible.

Today, people in New York smart enough to know better ? people like, for example, Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott, who went ahead and released the scores anyway. In fact, Walcott had the chutzpah to say upon the release of the rankings,?according to?the New York Times:

?I don?t want our teachers disparaged in any way, and I don?t want our teachers denigrated based on this information. This is very rich data that has evolved over the years?. I don?t want our teachers characterized in a certain way based on this very complex rich tool that we have available to us.?

Rich data? Who is he kidding other than himself?

Meanwhile, people in the Obama administration who should know better, including President Obama himself, have pushed for test scores to be a part of teacher assessment. And now states around the country are adopting these methods.

The U.S. Education Department likes to say that it actually supports ?multiple measures? in teacher evaluation. But a system of ?multiple measures? that includes standardized test scores and makes them important ? and in some cases, as we?ve seen, exclusively important ? is neither fair nor necessary.

There are high-performing school districts, such as in Montgomery County, Md., and Fairfax County, Va., where?teachers are evaluated?on a range of measures without standardized test scores in the mix ? and the system somehow managed to get rid of ineffective teachers anyway. But these systems, under federal and state pressure, are nearing the day when they will have to change their educator evaluation systems to include test scores, even though these systems work just fine without them.

Segments of public education had enough trouble before standardized testing became the be-all and end-all of assessment in the era of former president George W. Bush?s No Child Left Behind, and now, Obama?s Race to the Top.

With?apologies to Neil Young, ?Ooh, ooh, the damage done.? ~ Valerie Strauss

As to the men responsible for branding these teachers? rankings, I ask:What brand shall we give them in return? ?What scores will we give them in the mainstream media?

?I think it is time we take out a few ads and give the Witch Hunters some labels of our own. ?

Don't Look Back ? From Radio To Internet - Radio-Info.com

podcastingThe online radio show ? successful professional broadcasters are making the move to online broadcasting.
?
"You are never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream? ?C.S.Lewis

A lot of talented, experienced broadcast professionals now choose to do their shows online rather than on-air. The beauty of podcasting, or doing your show live on the internet, is that no one has to "hire you." If you?ve got a microphone and a computer you?re good to go.
?
Listeners are following their favorite personalities from radio onto the internet. Because they?re no longer forced to stick to a singular format, hosts are enjoying increased freedom online.? While experienced broadcasters are disciplined and understand the value of working with formatics, doing an online show offers an unmatched opportunity for creativity and experimentation. It?s not radio, it?s not TV, it?s not print. The internet offers all of these elements to enhance the audience?s experience. You can mix audio with visual and interactive components. You can talk, do in-depth interviews, play music, and interact (or not), with your audience.? Working online offers a blank canvas for creative self-expression. (There?s more on this in the chapter on Working Across Multiple Platforms in my book,? "Beyond Powerful Radio ? A Communicator?s Guide to the Internet Age.")
?
In the past, if you lost your job, you lost your means of distribution. You had to find another on-air gig to continue your career, but not anymore.? Now, personalities have the power of distribution in their own hands.
?
One former major market talk host who prefers to remain anonymous says, "After years of ratings success, there was a corporate takeover and I lost my job ...? In the beginning, of my career, I?d moved a lot, living in six different cities. Now I?ve got a family, my kids are in school, we own our home and we?re an active part of a community we love. My wife has a stable job, so for us, moving again wasn?t an option.?

"I had no luck when I applied everywhere in town for another radio job. At that point, I thought it was 'game over.?? But I?d amassed a sizable listener email data base. When my job ended, I sent out a note to that list, with my online contact information, saying, I?d be in touch with news of my next gig.? But I was going crazy not working, so I started a podcast. I let my listeners know where to find it and using social media, built from there.?

"Creatively, it was like being given wings.? No program director cramming mandatory topics down your throat.? When my unique downloads hit 25,000, I contacted former radio sponsors and offered them access to my targeted audience at a much lower rate than they?d been paying for their on-air spots. Several said ?OK, we?ll try it? ? which was great.? The show continues to grow and it's making money."
?
If you want to preserve one of the historically wonderful things about talk radio ? interactivity?you can put in a dedicated phone line and take callers live as you stream.? If you prefer to pre-record your show you can still use the ?comments? section on your site, giving your audience the opportunity to enter the conversation.? A huge advantage of podcasting is that you control your time. You can do your show when it?s convenient, then send a text or email to listeners when it?s posted.
?
Most notable for moving his "radio show" to the internet is Adam Carolla, who, after three years of hosting the Adam Carolla Show online, now averages around 2 million downloads a week. (The Guinness Book of World Records calls his show the most downloaded podcast ever.)? Carolla?s former employer, CBS Radio, now reps his site.
?
But it's not just individual personalities enjoying success online, whole entire radio stations have moved over. Audiences in British Columbia, Canada have embraced online-only channel: "Castanet," which serves the local resort community of Kelowna.
?
Other hosts use their online platform to pursue journalistic interests. Twelve years ago, with foresight and a desire to control content, former KABC Los Angeles talk show host Bill Pearl founded an online newspaper. LBReport.com, featuring? investigative reporting, covering Pearl?s town of Long Beach, California.
?
This same independent spirit applies to former radio personalities from a variety of radio formats. Some are having so much fun that one internet station isn?t enough. Former Kansas City talk show host George Kaywood was so enthusiastic, he developed and created online content in a variety of formats. You can hear them on www.radiogeorge.com.
?
BACK TO RADIO?
?
Canadian radio talk hosts Paul and Carol Mott, moved their talk show online and back to the airwaves again.? After leaving traditional radio, their online show, "The Motts" was so successful, that now, it's been picked up by a few stations.
?
And that?s happening a lot.? For ten years in Los Angeles, personality Barbara Blake was synonymous with the ?Smooth Jazz Sunday Brunch,? a live broadcast she hosted on KTWV "The Wave." After she left "the Wave" two years ago, Blake moved her show online to www.smoothjazzsundaybrunch.com. Blake's show is a case in point of a personality breaking format restrictions by combining elements of both music and talk radio.Today she?s got sponsors and a sizable international following with a niche audience of those who share her world view, enjoy her original content and artist interviews and are fans of smart, smooth jazz.? Blake hears regularly from radio stations asking if they can broadcast her programming.
?
Online radio shows are nothing if not diverse. Former Seattle Country personality Ichabod Caine and his partner Scallops host Wild Boar Radio.

Their name makes the point that they are free-form, not locked into any single format: Wild B.O.A. R. stands for ?Best Of All Radio.?
?
Howard Hoffman, formerly of? KABC Los Angeles, now combines his thriving voice-over career with internet radio on his site: Great Big Radio.
?
If you're thinking of moving your show online and need tech support, consider hiring your favorite radio station engineer. There are also several books, websites and organizations that can assist as well, such as www.Blogtalkradio.com and www.podcastanswerman.com.
?
THE PAYOFF
?
As with any entrepreneurial venture, you're responsible for overseeing every aspect of your business, including marketing, promotion and sales, and whether you do it all yourself or hire someone to help.

For sponsors and listeners alike, the Internet is a perfect sales environment for special interest or niche formats. Your audience is global ? so you can generate a huge following. If you?re not comfortable selling, find someone who is and who recognizes you have something unique to market.? No matter how obscure the theme of your show, say you host a talk show for people with overweight, aging cats - if it?s a good show, it will find an audience.

Cohen's 'Dictator' stunt not welcome at Oscars

By Matthew Belloni, The Hollywood Reporter

The mystery of Sacha Baron Cohen's plans for the Oscars has deepened, with the Academy going on the record to deny an online report that the comic actor has had his tickets for Hollywood's biggest event yanked.

"We haven't banned him," an Academy spokesperson tells The Hollywood Reporter. "We're just waiting to hear what he's going to do."

Still, the Academy is making it clear that Cohen is not welcome to use the red carpet as a platform for a promotional stunt for his upcoming movie "The Dictator."

Photos from THR: 2012 Academy Award nominees

THR first reported Tuesday that the actor, invited to attend the Oscars as a castmember of best picture nominee "Hugo," was hatching a plan to arrive at the event dressed as his "Dictator" character, a crass totalitarian leader hellbent on keeping democracy out of his country.

THR's story prompted the Academy to notify Cohen's reps and Paramount, the studio behind both "Hugo" and "Dictator," that it would like to know exactly what Cohen has planned. "We don't think it's appropriate," the Academy spokesman tells THR of the prospect of Cohen "hijacking" the red carpet to plug his movie. "But his tickets haven't been pulled. We're waiting to hear back."?

Photos from THR: Hollywood's memorable mea culpas

A Paramount spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Cohen's publicist has not returned an email seeking comment.

Cohen has a history of using awards shows and other big events to hype his movies. To help launch "Borat" in 2006, Cohen arrived at the Toronto International Film Festival dressed up as his TV journalist alter ego, riding a wagon pulled by ?Kazakhstani peasant women.? At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, he came as gay fashionista Bruno (to promote "Bruno").

The Academy is careful to exclude studio-specific film promotion from its annual Oscars telecast (it only recently allowed movie ads to run during commercial breaks), so Cohen's plans are being taken very seriously.

Should Sacha Baron Cohen be allowed to attend as the Dictator?

Va. governor opposes ultrasound abortion bill

Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell says he wants amendments to an ultrasound-before-abortion bill.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 5 p.m. ET: RICHMOND, Va. -- Shortly after Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell announced his opposition a Republican bill requiring vaginal probes of women seeking abortions, the state House on Wednesday approved a substitute version dropping that condition.

The House of Delegates voted 65-32 for the watered-down version. Under the substitute, women would still be required to have an ultrasound before an abortion to determine the gestational age, but women subject to a transvaginal procedure would be able to decline, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

That likely dooms the measure.

The amended bill now returns to the Senate where its sponsor, Sen. Jill Vogel, said she will strike the legislation.

The House action came moments after McDonnell -- facing outrage from women and appeals from GOP moderates -- announced he?was opposing the original bill requiring vaginal probes.

McDonnell, a social conservative who says he is "pro-life," appealed for amendments to the bitterly contested legislation. In a transvaginal ultrasound, a wand-like device is inserted and used to send out sound waves.

Until this week, McDonnell and his aides had said the governor would sign the measure if it made it to his desk.

"Over the past days I have discussed the specific language of the proposed legislation with other governors, physicians, attorneys, legislators, advocacy groups, and citizens. It is apparent that several amendments to the proposed legislation are needed to address various medical and legal issues which have arisen," the governor said in a written statement.

Among the amendments?McDonnell proposed: to explicitly state that no woman will have to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound involuntarily, and that only an external ultrasound will be required to satisfy the requirements to determine gestational age.

The bill had already won Senate passage. Opponents say it amounts to the state violating a woman's privacy. Supporters say it is medically prudent to determine fetal gestational age and, perhaps, discourage abortions.

Related: Texas begins enforcing strict anti-abortion sonogram law

While the original Virginia bill does require an ultrasound, it does not require the woman to view it, making it less strict than laws in Texas and Oklahoma, according to The New York Times.

More than 1,000 people, most of them women, on Monday locked arms and stood mute outside the Virginia State Capitol to protest the bill and other anti-abortion legislation under consideration by state lawmakers.

Comedian Jon Stewart poked fun at the measure Tuesday night on Comedy Central?s ?Daily Show.?

Iran begins military exercises aimed at defending nuclear sites | End ...

By Madison Ruppert

Editor of End the Lie

Iran has announced that they are holding new military exercises focusing on defending their nuclear sites from a possible future attack, which is looking increasingly likely especially with the March 5 meeting between Obama and Netanyahu at the White House, which is just the latest in a long string of high-level meetings between American and Israeli officials.

They announced that they have deployed warplanes and missiles along with anti-aircraft artillery systems, all part of a new effort to secure their nuclear sites from a potential Israeli attack, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Of course such an attack would almost certainly involve the United States as well and very likely Britain and France given that they already have warships in the region.

This latest Iranian military exercise has been called ?Sarollah,? meaning ?God?s vengeance.?

In a statement, the Iranian military said that it was also aimed at increasing the coordination between the main military and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

?These maneuvers aim to reinforce the coordination between the military and the Revolutionary Guards for a total coverage of the country?s sensitive facilities, especially nuclear sites,? the military stated.

This exercise ? which appears to be relatively large in scale, although the exact size is unclear ? makes it very clear that Iran is taking the threat posed by the West very seriously and thus is preparing for a military confrontation.

While Iran said that they stopped selling all oil to Britain and France in response to the European Union?s sanctions, France has already responded in just about the most childish manner possible.

?We decided to stop our orders,? said French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said. ?Our deliveries from Iran are pretty marginal in relation to our total purchases. I repeat that it is the EU that decided to put an embargo on Iranian oil sales.?

This reminds me of a schoolyard argument in which two children are yelling at each other, ?No, I saw it first!?

The fact is, the EU?s ban does not come into full effect until July and until then EU nations are allowed to continue to receive Iranian oil under previously established contracts.

The Iranian move to preemptively cut off their exports to Britain and France indeed is cutting off their oil supply before they were planning for it, although I agree with Juppe in that it likely will do very little to cripple these nations.

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the EU said ?it can cope with any halt in Iranian supplies.?

While this is true, I think it is worth pointing out that this will indeed likely raise the price of oil globally and hurt the already faltering global economy even further.

With a false flag in the United States looking even more likely with the repeated fear mongering coming from R. James Woolsey, James Clapper and Israel, it only makes sense that Iran is preparing to be hit with an attack from the West.

Sorvino estrena ópera prima tras años de problemas (omg!)

El actor Paul Sorvino en una imagen del 17 de noviembre del 2010 en Nueva York. (AP Foto/Evan Agostini)

ALLENTOWN, Pensilvania, EE.UU. (AP) ?

?Voil?!"

Colon Cancer Is The Third Most Commonly Diagnosed Cancer

This article has been viewed 19 times.

Colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world and is most common in developed countries. Colon cancer prognosis is very much dependent on the stage that the cancer is in when detected and treated.

Colon cancer is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Cancer is often a very sad and painful subject to talk about especially if you or someone you know has been affected by it. Colon cancer is also known as colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancers often start in the lining of the bowel and if left untreated can grow into the muscle. Most begin as a small growth on the bowel wall which is called a colorectal polyp. These mushroom-shaped growths are usually benign, but some can develop into serious cancer.

Symptoms include changes in bowel habits, lower gastrointestinal bleeding and blood in the stool.

The lifetime risk of developing colon cancer in the United States is about 7%. Factors that increase risk are age, family history of cancer, smoking and poor diet.

Colorectal cancer can take many years to develop and early detection of colorectal cancer greatly improves the chances of survival.

There are several different tests available for this screening which includes a digital rectal exam.

The doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel for abnormal areas. It only detects tumors large enough to be felt in the distal part of the rectum but is useful as an initial screening test.

Tests for blood in the stool are also useful.

A colonoscopy involves placing a lighted probe into the rectum and the entire colon to look for polyps and other abnormalities that may be caused by cancer. A colonoscopy has the advantage that if polyps are found during the procedure they can be removed immediately. Tissue can also be taken for biopsy to screen for cancer.

The best course of action is also prevention and regular screening. Lifestyle is important, eat healthy, get regular exercise and dont smoke. Make regular visits to your doctor and get tested.

The information provided is for discussion purposes only and not to be used for diagnosis or treatment. A medical professional should be consulted for diagnosis and treatment.

Breast cancer survivors share bond | Cancer Kick

? Inside every pink shirt is a survivor. Inside every survivor is a story.

Stacie Holley of Leo-Cedarville was one of dozens wearing a pink shirt to the annual IPFW Pink Out on Saturday that honored breast cancer survivors. She also wore a matching baseball cap to hide her bald head.

Holley, 49, was accompanied by her mother, Sherry Caldwell, 65, a breast cancer survivor of 21 years.

?I was about her age when I found out I had breast cancer,? Caldwell said, nodding in her daughter?s direction.

Holley was diagnosed seven months ago and recently completed six chemotherapy treatments, which induced some unpleasant side effects and caused her hair to fall out.

Holley?s sons, Cody, 14, and Chad, 9, shaved their heads in solidarity in October when their mother?s hair began to fall out. Her husband, Andy, has been her caretaker, Holley said, doing household duties and holding and comforting her during the nausea and vomiting spells caused by the treatments.

And her mom? Well, her mom has been her rock.

?The doctors never recommended a mammogram ? they thought I was too young ? but I followed my mom?s advice and had my first one when I was 27,? Holley said. ?When I was diagnosed, I thought, ?Well, here it is; it?s real.? ?

Holley?s cancer was caught at an early stage and had not spread to her lymph nodes, but she will continue chemotherapy until October.

?I?ll have a scan this fall and then, hopefully, I will be cancer free,? Holley said.

Her daughter?s cancer is a fear come true for Caldwell , who also has a 39-year-old daughter. She will never stop worrying about the genetic implications for her daughters and granddaughters.

?If I could go through this for her, I would,? Caldwell said. ?I do not want my daughter to endure this. It?s a tough road to travel.?
