Paralegal or Legal Assistant is an exciting profession in the Criminal Justice field. It is hard to imagine a law office without a paralegal. They can be described as the right hand of the lawyer. In this article I examine the role of the paralegal or legal assistant in the criminal justice field.
The legal assistant as the name suggests is there to assist the lawyer. It is vitally important to know that the paralegal cannot give legal advice or act as a lawyer. What the paralegal does must be under the supervision of a lawyer. The paralegal can do the following under the watchful eye of a lawyer:
1. The paralegal can conduct client interviews. They must identify themselves as paralegals to the client before starting the interview. In this instance, the legal assistant helps the lawyer ascertain the facts of a case by talking to the client.
This saves the lawyer valuable time. The lawyer can use that time to work on strategies for the case.
2. The legal assistant can locate and interview witnesses. If you watched the movie Erin Brockovich, you saw Julia Roberts play the role of a paralegal that locates and interviews clients. In one of the scenes, she clearly states that she is not a lawyer. This underlines the point above that paralegals cannot give legal advice. It also underlines the point that they identify themselves as such.
3. Legal assistants can research and prepare legal documents. Paralegals do acquire the training and experience necessary to prepare legal documents. All the lawyer has to do is double check the work to make sure it meets the legal requirements that such document requires. Again, I don?t have to tell what a valuable timesaver this is to a lawyer.
4. The paralegal can attend court trials. In this case, they help the lawyer with the case files. This way the lawyer is not fumbling in court looking for files or evidence. The paralegal is there to keep him or her organized.
I can write more volume on the role of the legal assistant or paralegal in the criminal justice field, but you get the point. It is indeed an exciting profession. Think of all the intriguing things that can be involved in a legal case. As a paralegal, you can be in the middle of it all.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Democrats are recruiting Hall of Fame football player Harry Carson to run for a House seat from New Jersey.
A congressional source says the former New York Giants linebacker would challenge five-term Republican Rep. Scott Garrett in a northern New Jersey district. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.
The 58-year-old Carson says he's interested, but wouldn't immediately say any more. Carson is in Hawaii for a family vacation and said by telephone that he might be able to say more in the next week or two.
He says the trip gives him a chance to think about his future and whether he enters politics.
Since retiring in 1988, Carson has worked as a broadcaster, written two books and focused on concussions in sports.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ? It may be the first business of its kind in California: A new local company is offering the services of its narcotics-sniffing dogs to parents who fear their kids are doing drugs.
The business, Drug Dog Services LLC, says the sensitive noses of their trained canines can help locate secret hiding spots and track down many narcotics, including prescription drugs like Oxycontin.
?If somebody calls me, in the back of their mind they think their kids are on drugs,? said trainer Sue Watkins.
Teen drug counselor Jon Daily said the drug-sniffing business could be a powerful tool for parents in uncovering proof of an addiction.
?When kids develop a relationship to intoxication, they protect that relationship, and they will hid, con, manipulate and cover up to hold onto it,? Daily said.
In a demonstration, CBS13 hid three training aids throughout a home ? a heroin-scent in a power outlet, Oxycontin-scent in a bathroom cabinet and methamphetamine-scent in a dresser drawer ? and let Watkins and one of the company?s narcotics-certified dogs, Julia, hunt them down.
She centered in on the power outlet in just over two minutes, directed Watkins to the bathroom cabinet at the four-minute mark and then zeroed in on the dresser drawer, finding all of the objects in six minutes and 36 seconds.
Julia doesn?t always work that fast, Watkins said. ?It depends on how much scent is in the house. It could be that she spends a lot of time where there?s lots of scent, and then she has to find the golden egg,? she added.
The search is designed to be non-confrontational ? the suspected addict can?t be at the house ? and the company charges about $100 for the search.
