In Self DefenseIn Self Defense is inspired by the true-life story of a martial arts legend who died at the hand of his own son. After fighting in the jungles of the South Pacific in World War II, Willy Wetzel and his family migrated from Indonesia to America in 1956. Willy opened one of the first martial arts schools in the United States in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He was a pioneer and became known worldwide for his mastery of many martial arts forms. The finest pupil Willy ever taught, was his second son, Roy Wetzel. The Wetzels all had their battle scars, some more visible than others. When Roy returned from Viet Nam with a Purple Heart, he hoped for a peaceful life at home. Instead Roy found himself in a fight with his father. One fateful night, their strained relationship finally came to a head. As Roy's young daughter lay asleep in the next room, a weapon-filled brutal fight between father and son ensued. The aftermath of Willy's last skirmish would leave Roy bloody and beaten and charged by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with Murder. This led to a controversial trial and the original court transcripts contained in the second half of this non-fiction novel give a compelling account of the prolonged legal contest that stirred up many debates. Following the lives of the Wetzels in intricate detail, In Self Defense will keep you turning the page till the very end. The SAS Self-Defense HandbookThe SAS Self-Defense Handbook

Platonic pals can?t pretend any longer

Hey dude. You know that female friend of yours who you know is secretly in love with you? When you watch movies, she leans against you. When she can?t quite make it home from Water Street, you let her crash at your place. You would never go there but it?s obvious that she wants you. Newsflash: it?s all in your head.
I know what you are thinking. You are pretty sure you picked up on those social cues (pick-up tricks from my dad: a girl is flirting with him when she ?flutters? her lashes, a.k.a. blinks, and tosses her hair, a.k.a. moves her head). How in the world could this be true?
Psychology Professor April Bleske-Rechek has been studying cross-sex friendships since graduate school but with a new twist ? from an evolutionary standpoint. Her findings found that men are more attracted to their female friends than women are to their male friends. In addition, men have a tendency to overestimate how attracted their female friends are to them.
Wait, this is the plot to half the movies you?ve seen. It always works out for them, right? But surprise, surprise, this is actually science.
Bleske-Rechek said cross-sex relationship have only been studied from a social behavior standpoint and this is the first time that biology has been proven to be a factor.
?There are a lot of benefits (to cross-sex friendships),? Bleske-Rechek said. ?Men and women report lots and lots of benefits. A lot of people say, ?well can you ever have true friendships?? Of course! Sexual attraction doesn?t mean it can?t be a true friendship where two people care for each other.?
In the study conducted about college students, Bleske-Rechek and her colleagues questioned 88 cross-sex heterosexual friendship pairs. The length of friendship varied from two weeks to 17 years, the study said.
Other findings from the study included being attracted to an opposite sex friend or developing a friendship with someone could lead to negative results within a person?s current relationship, Bleske-Rechek said.
?It?s possible that people are engaged in friendships where they maybe have companionships but someone isn?t paying attention to them,? Bleske-Rechek said. ?They are feeling desirable so this could change the dynamics of their romantic relationships or vise versa.?
Senior Josh Appel said he has had friendships with women for ten years that he considers to be purely friendships.
Appel did admit, though, that maybe once or twice there have been instances of attraction, but never anything that would be acted on. Bleske-Rechek?s research said men and women typically don?t consider those attractions to be enough to make it more than a friendship, but it is.
?I think people will say, ?oh it shouldn?t be like that?,? Bleske-Rechek said. ?Well of course it shouldn?t be like that but this is the reality of human relationships.?
The article, ?Benefits or Burden? Attraction in Cross-sex Friendship,? said platonic friendships very commonly involve attraction and often make girlfriends and boyfriends very jealous.
?The findings implicate attraction in cross-sex friendship as both common and of potential negative consequence for individuals? long-term mateships.? Bleske-Rechek said.
Alumn Erin Hirsch worked on the cross-sex friendship research with Bleske-Rechek for three and a half years while she attended UW-Eau Claire. Having platonic relationships is a biological desire and people shouldn?t resist them, she said.
?I think they are great to have. To get another opinion and perspective on life,? Hirsch said. ?With the research it is interesting to see that there is jealousy and attraction that plays a role in cross-sex friendships regardless of age and relationship status.?
Both Bleske-Rechek and Somers agreed that this biological response doesn?t seem to be something that people will evolve out of. Humans have a natural desire to reproduce and they surround themselves with opportunities to do so.
So your ?A Lot Like Love? fantasy of your bestie pal shamelessly throwing themselves at you in a very romantic display of affection might not be happening in the near future, but you never know. You surrounded yourself with them for a reason. Don?t let Hollywood get to your head, your friendship just might develop into something more. But it?s OK if it doesn?t, too.

Garbage bug may help lower the cost of biofuel

One reason that biofuels are expensive to make is that the organisms used to ferment the biomass cannot make effective use of hemicellulose, the next most abundant cell wall component after cellulose. They convert only the glucose in the cellulose, thus using less than half of the available plant material.

"Here at the EBI and other places in the biofuel world, people are trying to engineer microbes that can use both," said University of Illinois microbiologist Isaac Cann. "Most of the time what they do is they take genes from different locations and try and stitch all of them together to create a pathway that will allow that microbe to use the other sugar."

Cann and Rod Mackie, also a U of I microbiologist, have been doing research at the Energy Biosciences Institute on an organism that they think could be used to solve this problem.

Mackie, a long-distance runner, found the microbe in the garbage dump of a canning plant while running in Hoopeston, Ill., in 1993. He noticed that the ground was literally bubbling with microbial activity and took samples. He and his son Kevin, who was in high school at the time, isolated microbes from the samples.

Among these was a bacterium that was later named Caldanaerobius polysaccharolyticus. "We found many exciting enzymes from this organism," said Cann, who joined the project when he came to Mackie's lab as a postdoctoral researcher.

Specifically, the bacterium contains all of the proteins and enzymes needed to break down xylan, which is the most common hemicellulose, and then to transport the fragments into the cell and metabolize them. All of the genes are located in a single cluster on the microbe's genome.

"So instead of taking a piece from here and from there and stitching them together, we can just take this part of the gene," Cann explained. "You can cut this and put it into another microbe."

On the surface of the cell, there is an enzyme that cuts the xylan into small pieces and a protein that binds to the pieces and brings them inside the cell. Enzymes within the cell metabolize the sugar.

The reason that this microbe, unlike most others used to make biofuels, is able to degrade xylan is that it has evolved an enzyme that allows it to remove the side chains, or decorations, that are part of xylan's structure. They hinder the degradation process by preventing complete accessibility of the enzymes to the sugar chain.

Once the side chains have been removed, another enzyme in the microbe breaks the sugar chain down into single sugars, or xylose. Other enzymes within the cell then metabolize the xylose.

Having the enzymes next to each other on the genome is convenient for scientists who are working on engineering microbes that can degrade both cellulose and hemicellulose. The cluster could be designed as a cassette and put into a microbe that normally degrades only cellulose.

Moreover, being next to each other allows them to work efficiently. "You have a set of enzymes that have co-evolved," Cann explained. "If they have co-evolved over millions of years, it means they have been fine-tuned to work together."

Another advantage of Caldanaerobius polysaccharolyticus is that it is a thermophilic bacterium, and its enzymes are resistant to temperatures as high as 70 degrees Celsius. Biofuel fermentation is usually done at 37 degrees Celsius, a temperature at which most microbes can survive. This means that the material in the fermentation vats is easily contaminated.

The next step for Cann and his collaborators is to develop techniques for transferring this gene cluster, which is quite large, into microbes.

How Debt Consolidation Can Save You Money

I read somewhere that sooner or later, everyone sits down to a banquet of consequences. This is especially true in the case of debt. It's possible to have a lot of fun running up debts but eventually there will be consequences and they won't be pretty. If you have an overwhelming amount of debt, you know exactly what I mean. You're probably receiving harassing phone calls from your creditors or, worse yet, from collection agencies both day and night. You may be thinking about changing your phone number just to get rid of that never-ending barrage of calls. But trust me when I say that if you do this, you'll enjoy only short-term relief from those nasty calls as creditors are amazingly adept at finding people who have changed their numbers.

How debt consolidation works

The simplest explanation of how debt consolidation works is that you use new debt to pay off old debts.

There are several ways you could accomplish this. For example you could get a bank loan and pay off all your creditors. Alternately, you could go to a non-profit consumer credit counseling agency for help. Or you could do a balance transfer where you transfer the balances on high-interest credit cards to one with a lower rate. It's even possible to get a 0% interest balance transfer card, which would require you to pay no interest at all for as few as six or as many as 18 months.

How a debt consolidation loan saves money

All three of these forms of debt consolidation can save you money. Let's take a bank loan as an example and let's suppose you owe $15,000. If your debts have an average APR of 20% and total payments of $600 a month, it would take you 17 years to become debt free and you would pay a total of $25,611. On the other hand, if you were able to take out a debt consolidation loan at 9.95%, you could be debt free in 48 months, and would pay a total of just $18,112 or a savings of nearly $7,500. You would also be debt free 13 years faster.

How consumer credit counseling could help

A second popular way to consolidate debt is through consumer credit counseling. The way this works is that you are assigned a counselor who will help you develop a payment plan and negotiate with your creditors to get your interest rates reduced. If all of your creditors agree to your plan, you would then be required to send the credit counseling agency one payment a month until you completed your plan. While it's impossible to say exactly how much you would save with credit counseling, it should be a decent amount.

How a balance transfer could save you money

You could also save money if you were able to transfer your balances on high interest credit cards to one with a lower interest rate. Going back to the example of $15,000 in debt at an average APR of 20% and if you wanted to be debt free in 36 months, your monthly payment would be $558. In comparison, if you transferred that $15,000 in debt to a card with a 12% interest rate, your monthly payment would be just $499 or a savings of nearly $60 a month.

In summary

Regardless of which type of debt consolidation you choose, it will save you money. The important thing is to choose the one that will save you the most money and yet fit within your budget.

Go Here to compare consolidation and credit counseling and see which one may work better for your financial situation.

Attain Your Dreams By Following These Self Improvement Tips ...

An enormous step is admitting to yourself that there is a need for improvement. Here are some self-help strategies that will give you ideas on what you could try.

Even if you feel the need to change and grow, you will not do so until you choose to. Change is a highly personal and difficult choice that requires a real commitment.

If you see yourself failing to reach goals, then you need to analyze the situation to figure out what the problem is. Look for resources related to your issues and ask your friends about their struggles. You might need to be more realistic or gain the proper information you need to succeed.

Make a decision about where you want to go in life and stick with it. Pondering an ideal life without taking the action to make it a reality will inevitably lead to nothing. You need to step up and pursue your goals to make them really happen.

Because you allow yourself to be more vulnerable when pursuing personal development, failures can be especially hard to handle. But, failure doesn?t have to be something bad if you can learn from it and gain experience from it. It shows you what your strengths and your weaknesses are. Think of a failure as a discovery about yourself, perhaps as an adjustment to reality.

Select one important part of yourself that you would like to improve, and focus on that. You may wish to improve several different things about yourself, but you are more likely to succeed if you stick to one self-improvement project at a time. This also helps the changes stick because it is easier to maintain one new habit compared to ten.

You really have to put yourself first in order to be of any help to anyone else, and accept that you will never be able to please everyone. This doesn?t mean that you should only think of yourself, but in some cases, you really need to put yourself first. If what you?re doing is true to both your ethics and yourself, then you can be healthier with your path to self improvement.

Get rid of every part of your life that is disorganized. You will feel accomplished and your mind will feel clearer. The stress of living in disorganization will also disappear. Having everything in its own place instills a calming energy.

Your mental health can be directly influenced by the physical heath of your body. It is imperative to eat a well-balanced diet, and to get some form of exercise every day. If you have a strong body, you will have a strong mind.

Be the best you can be at what you are doing! Follow your passion to the greatest possible aspirations. You will never be number one at anything, but we can try to be great. Do your best to become a leader in your industry, as it will give your self-esteem a boost.

Higher Level

You should always want a higher level of self restraint when working hard for personal development. Learn to exercise restraint over the desires of the flesh to achieve a higher level of self control. Beat bad habits like gluttony, jealousy, lust or greed. Controlling these desires will prevent negative impacts on your body and spirit.

Use these tips and keep track of changes to your thoughts and feelings. Understand that it can?t all be accomplished at once.

NZ Oil and Gas buys interests in three Taranaki permits from Octanex

New Zealand Oil & Gas has agreed to acquire interests in three offshore Taranaki permits from ASX-listed Octanex for US$12.5 million plus a share of seismic costs.

The company will pay US$12.5 million for a 12.5 percent interest in PE51906 which holds the Makatu prospect and is expected to be drilled in the second half of next year. Octanex will retain 22.5 percent and operator OMV holds 65 percent, NZ Oil & Gas said in a statement.

PEP 51906 covers 1,613 square kilometres adjacent and west of the Maui field. OMV has estimated mean recoverable resource for the Matuku prospect at around 65 million barrels.

OMV is currently seeking a semi-submersible rig to drill an exploration well in the Matuku prospect before the end of 2013. If the exploration is successful and an appraisal well is drilled at Matuku, NZ Oil & Gas or Octanex can exercise an option to increase NZ Oil and Gas's interest by a further 5 percent to 17.5 percent. In Return it would pay Octanex's share of the appraisal well.

NZOG is also acquiring a 50 percent interest in PEP 53473 that covers 853 square kilometres north of Tui, paying for the interest by funding 75 percent of the seismic programme costs. The seismic evaluation has to be completed by March 2014.

It will also take 50 percent of PEP 52593, which covers 3,509 square kilometres in offshore Taranaki by meeting 60 percent of the seismic costs. The agreement is subject to regulatory approvals.

"These new acquisitions sit well within NZOG's New Zealand exploration portfolio, as they build on the knowledge base developed from NZOG's Taranaki history and provide exposure to the developing western fairway," chief executive Andrew Knight said in the statement.

Shares of NZ Oil & Gas rose 0.6 percent to 87.5 cents on the NZX and have gained 23 percent this year. The shares are rated 'outperform' based on the consensus of six recommendations compiled by Reuters.

Octanex last traded at 18.5 Australian cents on the ASX and has fallen 12 percent in the past 12 months.

Military's dogs of war also suffer post-traumatic stress disorder

LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas ? Not long after a Belgian Malinois named Cora went off to war, she earned a reputation for sniffing out the buried bombs that were the enemy's weapon of choice to kill or maim U.S. troops.

Cora could roam a hundred yards or more off her leash, detect an explosive and then lie down gently to signal danger. All she asked in return was a kind word or a biscuit, maybe a play session with a chew toy once the squad made it back to base.

"Cora always thought everything was a big game," said Air Force Tech. Sgt. Garry Laub, who trained Cora before she deployed. "She knew her job. She was a very squared-away dog."

    PHOTOS: Military dogs

But after months in Iraq and dozens of combat patrols, Cora changed. The transformation was not the result of one traumatic moment, but possibly the accumulation of stress and uncertainty brought on by the sharp sounds, high emotion and ever-present death in a war zone.

Cora ? deemed a "push-button" dog, one without much need for supervision ? became reluctant to leave her handler's side. Loud noises startled her. The once amiable Cora growled frequently and picked fights with other military working dogs.

When Cora returned to the U.S. two years ago, there was not a term for the condition that had undercut her combat effectiveness and shattered her nerves. Now there is: canine post-traumatic stress disorder.

"Dogs experience combat just like humans," said Marine Staff Sgt. Thomas Gehring, a dog handler assigned to the canine training facility at Lackland Air Force Base, who works with Cora daily.

Veterinarians and senior dog handlers at Lackland have concluded that dogs, like humans, can require treatment for PTSD, including conditioning, retraining and possibly medication such as the anti-anxiety drug Xanax. Some dogs, like 5-year-old Cora, just need to be treated as honored combat veterans and allowed to lead less-stressful lives.

Walter Burghardt Jr., chief of behavioral medicine and military working-dog studies at Lackland, estimates that at least 10% of the hundreds of dogs sent to Iraq and Afghanistan to protect U.S. troops have developed canine PTSD.

Cora appears to have a mild case. Other dogs come home traumatized.

"They're essentially broken and can't work," Burghardt said.

There are no official statistics, but Burghardt estimates that half of the dogs that return with PTSD or other behavioral hitches can be retrained for "useful employment" with the military or law enforcement, such as police departments, the Border Patrol or the Homeland Security Department.

The others dogs are retired and made eligible for adoption as family pets.

The decision to officially label the dogs' condition as PTSD was made by a working group of dog trainers and other specialists at Lackland. In most cases, such labeling of animal behavior would be subjected to peer review and scrutiny in veterinary medical journals.

But Burghardt and others in the group decided that they could not wait for that kind of lengthy professional vetting ? that a delay could endanger those who depend on the dogs.

Since the terrorist attacks of 2001, the military has added hundreds of canines and now has about 2,500 ? Dutch and German shepherds, Belgian Malinois and Labrador retrievers ? trained in bomb detection, guard duty or "controlled aggression" for patrolling.

Lackland trains dogs and dog handlers for all branches of the military. The huge base, located in San Antonio, has a $15-million veterinary hospital devoted to treating dogs working for the military or law enforcement, like a Border Patrol dog who lost a leg during a firefight between agents and a suspected drug smuggler.

"He's doing fine, much better," the handler yelled out when asked about the dog's condition.

Cora received her initial training here and then additional training with Laub at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia. Before they could deploy, however, Laub was transferred to Arkansas, and Cora shipped off to Iraq with a different handler, much to Laub's regret.

Does human transformation of land threaten future sustainability?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Social and physical scientists have long been concerned about the effects of humans on Earth's surface -- in part through deforestation, encroachment of urban areas onto traditionally agricultural lands, and erosion of soils -- and the implications these changes have on Earth's ability to provide for an ever-growing population. The December 2012 GSA Today science article presents examples of land transformation by humans and documents some of the effects of these changes.

Researchers Roger Hooke of the University of Maine, USA, and Jos? F. Mart?n-Duque and Javier Pedraza of Complutense University, Spain, examine factors such as available agricultural land area and discuss some of the implications of their findings in light of human population growth and its relationship to planetary resources.

Overall, they find that just over 50% of Earth's total land surface has been modified by human activity. Because many of these modifications also result in reduction of land available for agriculture -- either by degradation of land quality by processes such as soil erosion, or by transforming agriculture lands to urban uses -- Hooke and colleagues argue that these changes to our planet's land surface also influence the ability of these same lands to sustain local, regional, and, ultimately, global population.

Comparing projections of future changes in land-use with projections of population growth leads them to also suggest that human population may be entering, or already in, a state of "overshoot" -- where the needs of the present population exceed the long-term carrying capacity of a region. Solutions may not be easy to arrive at, but would need to involve a combination of efforts aimed to reduce demand for resources, develop new technical solutions to resource limitations, and to reduce the rate of growth of population.

Is It Wise to Choose a Foundation Repair Contractor Based on Their ...

Using the web to find a contractor you can trust with your money? and your home

The title of this article raises an interesting and relevant question. In a world dominated by the internet, it?s important to know how much we can trust what we find online. The web can be a tool for finding extremely useful information and services. But when you flip that coin over, you can also find yourself falling into money-pit type traps that will leave you wishing you had thrown your laptop in the garbage and looked in the phonebook instead.

So let?s address the question head-on: is it wise to choose a contractor based on their website? Here?s the short answer: no. However, the complete answer is more in-depth than that. There are a lot of factors at play here.

A company website can certainly be used to decide NOT to hire someone.?You see, anyone can put up a website that looks nice. But there are some tell tale signs of a company that can?t be trusted. For example, if there are no customer reviews, you need to run and run quick. It either means the company doesn?t value customer input, or no positive reviews exists that they can flaunt. Also, if the website is too much hype, leave. You don?t need them to beat you over the head with their sales message. A useful site seeks to offer useful information first. The sales message should take a back seat. Otherwise you can bet they will be pushy. And by pushy, we mean they are going to try to dig deep into your wallet fast.

Now then you have the classic signs of a sketchy site. Pop up ads, keyword stuffing, and bad links. If you find any of this, run.

If it?s a trustworthy contractor, what you should find is plenty of good information on how to repair foundations, how to spot foundation issues, and things like that.

Web 2.0 is where it?s at in 2012.?Finding a worthwhile contractor online involves much more than simply Googling a company website and making a phone call or shooting an email. In this day and age of social media, multiple internet avenues exist for you to check out a company. For example, what is being said on Twitter about the?foundation repair?company? How many people are following their account? This could be a good picture into how helpful they really are. The same goes for their number of Facebook likes. And did you check them out on a site like Yelp to make sure people give them positive reviews?

Look at the BBB site.?What is their customer rating? Has anyone filed a formal complaint against them? And if so, how did they respond? Did they break their backs to try and make a satisfied customer? Or did they respond harshly and pompously?

The web is a fantastic place to find help from basement contractors. Just make sure you don?t get enamored by a decent looking website without really checking out the company.

End of an era: Myanmar's buses head for scrap

This once-isolated country is replacing its fleet of buses cobbled together from the shells of World War II-era Chevy trucks. ?NBC News' Ian Williams reports on this antique roadshow on wheels that is being swept away by rapid change.

    By Ian Williams, NBC News

YANGON, Myanmar -- U Ming Kyi affectionately tapped the hood of his dilapidated bus.??Of course I?ll be sad to see it go. They are really reliable. The brakes are great,? he said.

But on this particular morning, bus No. 61 from North Dagon to San Pya market was not cooperating.?The engine screeched and smoked as U Ming sat behind the wheel, turning the key and willing it to life.

He gave up and glanced back at the passengers. As if on cue - and clearly well practiced - several jumped from the bus and began pushing until it spluttered, gasped, then finally roared to life.

Bus no 61 was on its way across the north of Yangon, as it has been for decades.

U Ming smiled gingerly. He?s been driving these buses for thirty five years, and keeping on the road what are possibly the oldest buses in the world still operating needs constant improvisation.

    Ian Williams/NBC News

Driver U Ming Kyi at the wheel of bus number 61. He's been driving the Big Belly Chevy for 35 years.

In Myanmar they are called ?big belly? buses and the chassis of no 61 was registered in 1939.?Back then it was a military truck - a Canada-built Chevy C-15. These were used by the United States, Britain and western allies during the ?Burma Campaign? ? the south-east Asia theater of the Second World War.

After the conflict, Myanmar?s military regime converted them into buses. The makeshift vehicles quickly became the mainstay of a transport system that resembled until recently an antiques show on wheels.

But in a sign of the rapid wider changes sweeping this country, they have been banned from the increasingly traffic-clogged center of Yangon, Myanmar?s main city, and are being phased out to be replaced by shiny new Japanese models.

    Ian Williams/NBC News

Passengers packed on board bus number 61. Big Belly Bus.

The price of an old ?big belly? has suddenly gone through the roof - not because of the vehicle, which is off to the junk yard, but because of the valuable operating license that goes with it.

If he had the money, U Ming would buy one himself. ?The new ones just won?t be the same,? he said. He can read every crunch, bang and hiss - of which there are many on a bumpy, shaky ride across the city.

Like most vehicles here, the ?big belly? is right hand drive, a legacy of British rule when traffic drove on the left. Yet the traffic in Myanmar now drives on the right, as in the US, which means drivers like U Ming spend a good deal of their time staining to see what?s coming at them.

Former dictator Ne Win made the switch after seizing power in 1962. Some say it was an anti-colonial gesture. Others put it down to his notorious superstition: The U.K.?s Daily Telegraph said he took the decision after consulting a wizard.

    Ian Williams/NBC News

The interior of a Big Belly Bus.

That these buses operated for so long, patched together with whatever parts were available during years of isolation and sanctions, is testament to the ingenuity of men like U Ming.

All is not lost, though. Long time Italian resident Alberto Peyre has bought three and given them a luxurious face lift to serve the country's tourism boom.

?They are a piece of history, a piece of history,? he said, as immaculately dressed attendants handed us cold towels as we sat in expensively upholstered seats for a mini-tour of the city.

?I love these buses. I just love them,? he said.

Peyre?s company, Elephant Coach, is marketing tours as ?the ultimate luxury in overland travel.? It?s a long way from the U Ming?s no 61, but will ensure that these remarkable old machines will not entirely disappear from the streets of Myanmar.

Garage Wish List | 'Bout Home

The holiday season has begun, and thoughts will soon turn towards gift buying.? Instead of another sweater or robe for your significant other, opt instead to purchase items to make the garage a place of order and refuge.? It doesn?t matter if the recipient is male or female, as both sexes can appreciate gifts that either make life easier or more beautiful. From garage door openers to storage units, these gifts will be sure to please any homeowner.

An electric garage door opener is a necessity in cold climates.? Instead of getting out of a warm car on a dark night to open the garage door, these gadgets keep a person comfortable.? It?s 100% better to be able to automatically open and close a garage door than to have to do it manually; therefore, giving one as a gift will bring a huge smile to the face of the recipient.

Similarly, if a home has a dilapidated garage door, a new door would be a welcome gift.? Not only will a new door look better, it will help insulate the home more effectively.? Although a new garage door (and installation) may not be the perfect gift for everyone, I am sure a young couple who bought a fixer-upper would appreciate mom and dad paying for one.

The gift of safety speaks volumes.? Purchase a motion activated spotlight for above the garage door to thwart any would-be burglars.? These lights also work great for families who have children who need to use the garage keypad for entrance into the home at night.

Middle-priced items for the garage, such as storage units, also make wonderful gifts.? What homeowner doesn?t want to get a handle on all the the tall tools from rakes to shovels to garden hoes?? Or paint supplies?? Or garden supplies? There are storage units in all sizes and shapes to fit every need.

Also middle-priced are small refrigerators.? This gift item would be appreciated by a person who tends to spend a lot of time outside, and who would like the convenience of a cold drink without having to go all the way into the home.

Less expensive items for the garage could be used as stocking stuffers.? For instance, metal hooks for hanging bicycles from the ceiling will be appreciated, as will a new flashlight.? Another great idea ? a gift card to a home improvement store!

Of course there are many more gift ideas for the garage.? I know my husband?s favorite gift from me one year was the new riding lawn mower that is stored in the garage!? And he also liked the leaf blower and snow blower from previous years.

For homeowners, gifts that improve the look of the garage (new door), or the ease of use (garage door opener) can be most welcome.? Instead of buying another box of cologne or perfume, choose an item that will be used instead.

'Spiritual' estate planning passes on values of departed | The Salt ...

(Carline Jean/Sun Sentinel/MCT) Bequests to charities are up 19 percent in a year, but giving goes beyond leaving money to a favorite group, said Florida attorney Alice Reiter Feld. ?It?s leaving money with a purpose.?

Legacies ? Effort gives them say in how survivors can spend their inheritance.

"Spiritual" estate planning ?deciding how to pass down money based on values ?is becoming a hot topic for baby boomers who want to make sure their values endure, financial planners say.

Bequests to charities are up 19 percent in a year, according to Charity Navigator, a nonprofit that monitors charities. But it goes beyond leaving money to a favorite group, said South Florida attorney Alice Reiter Feld.

"It?s leaving money with a purpose," she said.

That extends into deciding how to give money ? or not ?to family members, Feld said.

Those drawing up an estate plan first have to decide who is included among their kin, in this age of blended families and second or third marriages, Feld said.

"With all the kinds of families these days, there?s no simple answer."

Other thorny questions from today?s complicated relationships include should couples in a relationship make sure their children from a previous marriage get their own bequests, separate from the new spouse?

    Yes, Feld recommends.

A surviving step-parent may give the couple?s possessions to his or her children. Stepchildren can then get passed over ? unless estate planning leaves them a specific amount, Feld said.

In setting up a will, parents also need to consider, "Have you passed on your financial values to kids?" Feld said she asks clients. "Sometimes, I have to send them home to think about it."

    story continues below

Some retirees who believe in frugality may decide to leave money in a trust to guarantee that free-spending kids ? or their spouses ? won?t squander it all, she said.

Putting money in a trust for surviving relatives can protect it from any creditors or even an ex-spouse, attorney Feld added.

"It?s more control beyond the grave," added Mari Adam, a Boca Raton, Fla., financial planner who has seen more clients wanting to have a say how their kin spends their inheritance.

A growing number of parents also are deciding not to give equal amounts to their surviving children, financial planners say. Rather, some feel morally responsible in caring for less well-off children, said Ben Tobias, a Plantation, Fla., financial planner.

If one of their children is wealthy, for example, some parents may decide they need to give more of an inheritance to an adult son or daughter who is less well off or who has a special-needs child, Tobias said.

"For whatever reason, they are opposed to doing it equally," Tobias said.

Feld has seen the same trend, although she personally feels that children should be treated equally.

New vaccine may give lifelong protection from flu

Flu season has come early this year in parts of the northern hemisphere, and many people are scrambling to get their annual vaccination. That ritual may someday be history.

In a first for any infectious disease, a vaccine against flu has been made out of messenger RNA (mRNA) ? the genetic material that controls the production of proteins. Unlike its predecessors, the new vaccine may work for life, and it may be possible to manufacture it quickly enough to stop a pandemic.

We become immune to a flu strain when our immune system learns to recognise key proteins, called HA and NA, on the surface of the flu virus. This can happen either because we have caught and fought off that strain of flu, or because we received one of the standard vaccines, most of which contain killed flu virus.

Flu constantly evolves, however, so those proteins change and your immunity to one year's strain does not extend to following year's. For this reason, a new vaccine has to be produced each year. Most flu vaccines are grown in chicken eggs or cell culture, a process that takes at least six months.

This time lag means that the World Health Organization has to predict months in advance which viruses are most likely to be circulating the following winter. Drug companies then make a new vaccine based on their recommendations. Of course, these recommendations can be wrong, or worse, when a completely new flu virus causes a pandemic, its first waves can be over before any vaccine is ready.

    Freeze-dried vaccine

Now there could be a solution. The mRNA that controls the production of HA and NA in a flu virus can be mass-produced in a few weeks, says Lothar Stitz of the Friedrich-Loeffler Institute in Riems Island, Germany. This mRNA can be turned into a freeze-dried powder that does not need refrigeration, unlike most vaccines, which have to be kept cool.

An injection of mRNA is picked up by immune cells, which translate it into protein. These proteins are then recognised by the body as foreign, generating an immune response. The immune system will then recognise the proteins if it encounters the virus subsequently, allowing it to fight off that strain of flu.

Similar vaccines have been made of DNA that codes for flu proteins. But DNA vaccines seem unlikely ever to be approved, because of worries that they might be incorporated into human DNA, disrupting gene regulation.

    Safety advantage

That is not a risk with mRNA, which cannot become part of the genome. For this reason, "RNA probably has advantages over DNA as concerns safety," says Bjarne Bogen of the University of Oslo, Norway, who is working on a DNA vaccine for flu.

Trial RNA vaccines have failed, however, after being destroyed rapidly in the blood. But CureVac, a company in T?bingen, Germany, has found that a protein called protamine, binds to mRNA and protects it. It has an mRNA vaccine against prostate and lung cancer tumours in human trials.

"Amazingly, mRNA vaccines have never been really tested against infectious diseases," says Stitz. His team used CureVac's process to make durable mRNA vaccines for common human flu strains, as well as H5N1 bird flu. In mice, ferrets and pigs, the vaccines rapidly elicited protective levels of antibodies.

    Two-pronged immunity

They also induced cell-mediated immunity, which is an immune response that does not involve antibodies but activates blood cells such as killer T-cells to destroy specific pathogens. Vaccines made only of the proteins do not elicit this type of response. Having both types of immunity clears infection faster, and can also protect against flu for longer, as cell-mediated reactions still recognise flu viruses after they have evolved enough to evade antibodies.

A true universal vaccine for fluMovie Camera, however, would induce immunity to proteins that are the same in all flu viruses, but which flu normally hides from the immune system. Stitz's team made an mRNA vaccine to one such protein from an ordinary seasonal flu. The vaccine not only protected animals from that flu strain, but also from H5N1 bird flu.

Vaccines that work against all flu strains could eventually be given once in childhood, like vaccines for other diseases. Meanwhile, Stitz is also working on an mRNA vaccine for rabies. "We think that mRNA would provide an excellent platform against viral, bacterial and fungal diseases," he says.

What Not To Do When You Learn To Scuba Dive ... - sjomlu - Typepad

    Related eBooks

Scuba Diving is an underwater recreational sport that has gained immense popularity of late. The dive enthusiasts spend most of their time in expectation of a quality dive; however, they lose out on the basics that are important for a dive: Safety. There are some basic rules that need to be followed to enjoy a safe and pleasurable dive in the waters.

The safety is one of the most crucial factors that is considered in this sport. If you want to learn to scuba dive ensure that your instructor gives you proper theoretical as well as practical training. Some of the important things that you should not do while practicing this sport include the following:

    Hangovers can hurt underwater

If you are serious about learning diving then it important that you leave the pint out. A tall glass of beer or small volumes of alcohol can result in terrible consequences while diving. Always remember that hangovers hurt and they become worse underwater. The air pressure on your head is doubled and you feel nauseated if you dive after a good drink previous night. To avoid the suffocation and misery, it is advisable to drink light or just leave out alcohol from your menu the previous night.

    Don?t miss out the theory

For the first-time divers, it is always exciting to go underwater and not even pay attention to the basics. Most young or amateur divers tend to leave out the basics aside. It poses a great risk to the divers and it can also become life-threatening if practical classes are focused more than theory. It is important to understand important aspects of diving such as buoyancy and different safety measures before going for the actual dive.

    Don?t Forget your Buddy

Scuba diving can be a memorable experience and offer you all the fun if you have a buddy close at hand. Don?t forget a buddy for your first classes or even dive in a group. A buddy is always required in case of any emergency or safety issue. More than a safety tip, diving with a buddy is a good way to learn and sharpen your skills and helps in understanding the basic facts about group diving.

    Instructor is always right!

Listen to your instructor. We tend to neglect the wise words of our dive trainers and take their instructions lightly; whereas, one should pay proper attention to their lessons. An instructor is a trained and experienced dive expert who understands the different aspects and circumstances related to quality diving.

Hospitality Industry Workers' Compensation Insurance Risks ...

    November 22, 2012 ? 7:19 am

??The Tennessee Supreme Court held that a manager was entitled to benefits at the statutory maximum of six times his medical impairment?the manager was denied a meaningful return to work when he was terminated in retaliation for filing his claim. The manager?s age, education, training, work experience, and limitations warranted the six-times multiplier??

A co-manager for a fast food restaurant was repairing a heating element used to keep food warm. Someone plugged the heating element into an electrical outlet. An electrical shock caused the manager to lose consciousness. He suffered from burns on his hands, chest pains, headaches, and memory loss. He repeatedly asked his supervisor to pay his medical expenses and authorize medical care for his symptoms. The district manager said he would ?take care of it,? but the bills remained unpaid. The manager filed a workers? compensation claim, and the restaurant was fined for failing to timely report the incident. Days after the claim was filed, his supervisor ?vulgarly expressed his anger? about the claim. Within weeks, the manager, who had never received a reprimand, received two reprimands and was later terminated.

A neurologist diagnosed the manager with a migraine condition and epilepsy and opined that the conditions were caused by the electrical shock. The neurologist found that he reached maximum medical improvement with a 10 percent impairment to the body as a whole. A vocational expert opined that the manager suffered a 65 percent vocational disability based on his age, limitations, work history, and the local labor market. The manager was unable to find gainful employment other than occasional ?odd jobs.? The Tennessee Supreme Court held that he was entitled to benefits at the statutory maximum of six times his medical impairment.

The court rejected the restaurant?s argument that the maximum multiplier possible was meant to punish it for mishandling the claim rather than an assessment of disability.

Wreck victims on family's first Thanksgiving apart

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) ? The children of a Houston-area couple killed during Thursday's massive interstate wreck in Texas say this year was the family's first Thanksgiving apart.

Authorities are investigating the chain-reaction wreck that involved more than 100 vehicles, many of which were left twisted on top of each other. The wreck killed the couple and injured at least 80 other people during heavy fog along Interstate 10 near Beaumont.

Vincent and Debbie Leggio were on their way to Louisiana for a gambling trip when their vehicle was caught in the wreck, sons V.J. and Richard Leggio told KHOU-TV.

"My parents are wonderful loving people ? all who knew them knew that," V.J. Leggio told the station. "They will be sorely missed ? sorely missed."

He said he worked with his father at the family business, Vinco Electric in Pearland, the Houston suburb where his parents lived.

"We had a good relationship," he added. "We got to spend time together golfing and fishing, and I'm so thankful for that now."

Hospitals have released most others injured in the crash, though 12 people were reported in serious condition Thursday night. Phone messages left Friday for law enforcement officials weren't returned.

The wreck occurred southwest of Beaumont, on Texas' Gulf Coast. The heavy fog made it hard for law enforcement to determine at first how many wrecks had occurred.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a crash on the eastbound side of the highway led to other accidents in a dangerous chain reaction. There were multiple crashes on the other side of the highway as well.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Chuck Havard told KFDM-TV on Friday that investigators will work to determine whether any drivers will face charges.
