Women's Track and Field Successful at St. Thomas Invite

PAUL?The Bethel University women's track and field team competed in their second indoor meet of the 2013 season Friday evening, taking on Saint Mary's University, the College of Saint Catherine, and the hosting Tommies of St. Thomas at the Anderson Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of St. Thomas. The Royals had several solid performances and continued its improvement from last Saturday's opener.

Two BU runners had solid performances in the sprints Friday, as Ashley Magelssen (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) finished second in the 60-meter dash and Krista McCright (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) finished second in the 200-meter. Magelssen recorded a time of 8.18 in the prelims and followed it up with an 8.16 race in the final heat?finishing behind St. Thomas' Erika Tipp, who ran a 7.97 final. McCright also ran in the 60-meter dash, finishing tied for fourth with a time of 8.28. However, McCright had added success in the open 200, as her final race of 27.72 finished second overall.

The Royals only first place finish came in the 1000-meter run, as Michelle Tellez (So., Oswego, Ill.) outlasted a Saint Mary's runner with a time of 3:25.79 to capture first.

In addition to a number of top marks around the racetrack, Bethel also witnessed strong finishes in the field events. Steph Skoog (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) competed to a second-place result in the high jump?clearing 1.58 meters in the final jump. Meanwhile, KelliAnne O'Leary (So., Red Wing, Minn.) also recorded a second-place finish with her vault of 2.90 meters.

Bethel's unit will take a weekend off before hosting the Bethel Invitational held at the Sports and Recreation Center on campus February 2. Events that day are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
