Bullying has long-term health consequences

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Childhood bullying can lead to long term health consequences, including general and mental health issues, behavioral problems, eating disorders, smoking, alcohol use, and homelessness, a study by the Crime Victims' Institute at Sam Houston State University found.

"What is apparent from these results is that bullying victimization that occurs early in life may have significant and substantial consequences for those victims later in life," said Leana Bouffard, Director of the Crime Victims' Institute. "Thus, the adverse health consequences of victimization are much more far-reaching than just immediate injury or trauma. Understanding these long term consequences is important to assessing the true toll of crime on its victims and on society as well as responding to victims more effectively."

The study, "The Long Term Health Consequences of Bullying Victimization," recommends investing in victim services and effective prevention programs, such as the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, a school based initiative for violence prevention. Programs can help address the immediate trauma, both mental and physical, that victims experience.

"This type of investment may also have the added benefit of reducing the long-term deleterious effects identified in this and other studies, thus reducing the high cost of victimization born by the victims themselves, the health care system and society in general," Bouffard said.

The current study is based on the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, a long term study that tracks a sample of U.S. residents born between 1980 and 1984. Nineteen percent of those surveyed said they had been a victim of repeated bullying.

The study found that those bullying victims had more negative perceptions of their general health and mental health and higher rates of emotional/mental or behavioral problems that interfered with school or work. They were also more likely to have an eating disorder, smoke, consume alcohol, experience subsequent violent victimization, or be homeless.

"While these are adverse consequences themselves, they may also serve as intermediate mechanism for even more long-term health issues, such as cancer, alcoholism, depression and other serious problems," said Maria Koeppel, co-author of the study.

Metabolic syndrome makes a difference in hormone therapy risk, analysis suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? A new analysis of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) trials show that women who had metabolic syndrome before they started hormone therapy had a greatly increased risk of heart attack or dying of heart disease. Women who didn't have metabolic syndrome beforehand showed no increased risk.

The study was published this month online in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society.

"Our findings emphasize the importance of assessing cardiovascular disease risk status when hormone therapy is considered for relief of menopausal symptoms," wrote the WHI investigators who authored the study.

Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that occur together and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. They include a large waistline, high blood pressure, high blood glucose or diabetes, high triglycerides, or low HDL -- the "good cholesterol." Obesity is the key feature, which predisposes women to the others.

In this analysis, a woman was considered to have metabolic syndrome if she had three of any of the five metabolic syndrome features; 269 women met the criteria when they started the trial and were compared with 695 women who did not have metabolic syndrome.

The women who did not have metabolic syndrome showed no increased risk of heart disease, whether they took hormones or not. But the risk of a heart attack or dying of heart disease was more than double for women who had metabolic syndrome and took hormones (either combined estrogen-progestogen or estrogen alone if they had undergone hysterectomy) compared with women who had metabolic syndrome and did not take hormones. Women with metabolic syndrome who took estrogen alone had a smaller increase in risk, but they were still at significantly higher risk than women with metabolic syndrome who did not take hormones.

In the WHI, women took oral formulations of hormone therapy, which were common at the time. Today, smaller doses and other forms, such skin patches or gels, are being used. In addition, women in the WHI were older (average age 66 in this analysis) than the age women usually start hormone therapy for menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats. Newer formulations and earlier use of hormone therapy may be safer, but more study needs to be done to find out if having metabolic syndrome makes a difference with these types of hormone therapy.

London black cab maker appoints PwC as administrators

(Reuters) - Manganese Bronze Holdings Plc, the maker of London's famous black taxis, said it has appointed accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers to look at options including the sale of the company if funding cannot be arranged to save it.

The future of the company, which has been losing market share to Mercedes Vito taxis sold by Eco City Vehicles, has looked bleak since it was forced to halt sales and recall its latest model as a result of a steering box defect.

PricewaterhouseCoopers, as administrator, has already begun talks with several interested parties from the United Kingdom and overseas, Manganese Bronze said.

"The administrators are reviewing the group's current financial position to develop a range of options to rescue the business or alternatively dispose of its assets to an investor that can secure the future of the London taxi," it said.

Coventry-based Manganese Bronze, whose taxis have been on British streets since 1948, has reported losses since 2008.

It suspended trading in its shares earlier this month after saying its financial position was unclear after the discovery of a safety defect in its new TX4 model.

The company's two largest shareholders, China's Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd and Toscafund Asset Management, were approached for funds earlier but no agreement was reached.

Manganese Bronze shares closed at 10 pence on October11, the last day they traded on the London Stock Exchange, valuing the company at about 3 million pounds ($4.81 million).

Your pension: are you saving enough for your life after retirement ...

?

Before going into details I would like to give a brief background about pensions in Zambia, thanks to Mr Justine Kabwe (Insurance Institute of Zambia president) for contributing some points to this topic.

Please note that a detailed account on this subject is contained in the book I have written dubbed ?Basics of Insurance, The Zambian Experience? which will be coming out very soon.

In Africa generally people in villages and even urban areas treasured the extended family and this provided a form of security in both food and shelter.

The traditional economic activity depending on the area of Zambia one prefers to study their history, would find that this notion was emphasised and promoted through working together.

If somebody had a big land to till they would agree on a certain day to go and assist that person through what in Bemba they called ?ichima? and after a hard day of toil they would sit together and share food cooked by women from various homesteads.

There is no evidence to show whether individually they saved for a rainy day in the future. The more children someone had the more secure they felt of their future.

However, against this belief, as renowned economist and writer Anita M. Shwarz (2003) pointed out, the extended family was not and has never been a perfect way to safe guard one?s future, especially if the children of that particular person are economically disadvantaged as well.

The history of formal pension provisions in Zambia spin around the set up of commercial enterprises somewhere around 1900s, with the main employment provided by the mines, subsistence farming, transport and later education.

? IN modern times employers are arranging a pension?s scheme on behalf of their employees.

The pension component was not imbedded in the employment conditions of service until the 1970?s when the government harmonised the retirement benefits for all para-state employees.

When the colonial government came into being, those in government started some form of savings which were arranged with insurance companies and retirement policies were either as deferred or immediate
annuities.

Subsequently, even those who were uneducated at the time of independence learnt that they could plan for their retirement while working and this put pressure on the colonial masters to extend
coverage to indigenous Zambians working especially in the civil service.

This led to the creation of what was called the Local Conditions Pensions Fund in 1968 to cover all civil servants in the country though this was later renamed the Public Service Pension Fund.

In 1954 the Local Authorities Superannuation Fund [LASF] was established to provide pensions for employees in the local authorities. Later in 1966 the government created the Zambia National
Provident Fund (ZNPF) to cover employees outside the civil service and local authorities.

Up until 1992, pension and insurance business was restricted to the state owned Zambia State Insurance Corporation Limited (ZSIC) which provided retirement policies through its Life and pension division.
The law did not allow competition except for Mukuba Pension Scheme set up for the mining industry. When the economy was liberalised several new players set up insurance companies which offered retirement
benefit plans (Hantuba. M 2005).

Zambia has a long history of both social security arrangements and pension practice predominantly based on social insurance principle with social security cover restricted to citizens in the formal sector
and social welfare based support based on social assistance to citizens who are unable to contribute to the conventional schemes.

The first ever Social Insurance was created by the Germany government during the reign of chancellor Bismarck in 1889 and from its initial stage to date it has gone through tremendous progress such that almost every country has its own system of social insurance.

In Zambia there are four statutory pension schemes, that is, the Public Service Pensions Fund (PSPF), the Workers Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB), the Local Authority Superannuation Fund (LASF)
and the National Pensions Scheme Authority (NAPSA).

In modern times we have seen employers arranging a pension?s scheme on behalf of their employees where an employee contributes a certain amount or percentage of their earnings and the employer also a
percentage.

These are referred to as occupational pension schemes and must be registered with the regulator of the pensions and insurance authority (PIA).

There are currently about 222 registered private and occupational pension schemes in Zambia covering over 100,000 members.

Types of Pension Schemes

The two common types of pensions schemes are Defined benefits (DB?s) schemes and Defined Contributions (DC?s) or money purchase schemes.

Nexus 7 sales clocking in at close to a million per month

DNP It's official, Nexus 7 sales clocking in at close to a million a month

While it was pretty clear that ASUS' Google-partnered Nexus 7 contributed heavily to the Taiwanese maker's healthy Q3 results, there was no official confirmation on its exact sales figures so far. ASUS CFO David Chang has now come clean and told the WSJ that the 7-incher is close to touching the one million per month mark, just about double the rate of sales at its launch. While this number is a fraction of the iPad's sales (14 million in the last quarter alone), it could well go up due to the recent price drop and the addition of new 32GB models to the portfolio. On the flip side, the Nexus 7 is sure to face heat from close rivals, the Kindle Fire HD and the 7.9-inch Apple iPad mini, while the mega-spec Nexus 10 will also entice some buyers away from ASUS' reach.

Couple of weekly portions of oily fish can help ward off stroke: But fish oil supplements don't have the same effect

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Eating at least two servings of oily fish a week is moderately but significantly associated with a reduced risk of stroke, finds a study published on the British Medical Journal website.

But taking fish oil supplements doesn't seem to have the same effect, say the researchers.

Regular consumption of fish and long chain omega 3 fatty acids has been linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease and current guidelines recommend eating at least two portions of fish a week, preferably oily fish like mackerel and sardines. But evidence supporting a similar benefit for stroke remains unclear.

So an international team of researchers, led by Dr. Rajiv Chowdhury at Cambridge University and Professor Oscar H. Franco at Erasmus MC Rotterdam, analysed the results of 38 studies to help clarify the association between fish consumption and risk of stroke or mini-stroke (transient ischaemic attack or TIA). Collectively, these conditions are known as cerebrovascular disease.

The 38 studies involved nearly 800,000 individuals in 15 countries and included patients with established cardiovascular disease (secondary prevention studies) as well as lower risk people without the disease (primary prevention studies). Differences in study quality were taken into account to identify and minimise bias.

Fish and long chain omega 3 fatty acid consumption was assessed using dietary questionnaires, identifying markers of omega 3 fats in the blood, and recording use of fish oil supplements. A total of 34,817 cerebrovascular events were recorded during the studies.

After adjusting for several risk factors, participants eating two to four servings a week had a moderate but significant 6% lower risk of cerebrovascular disease compared with those eating one or fewer servings of fish a week, while participants eating five or more servings a week had a 12% lower risk.

An increment of two servings per week of any fish was associated with a 4% reduced risk of cerebrovascular disease. In contrast, levels of omega 3 fats in the blood and fish oil supplements were not significantly associated with a reduced risk.

Several reasons could explain the beneficial impact of eating fish on vascular health, say the authors. For example, it may be due to interactions between a wide range of nutrients, like vitamins and essential amino acids, commonly found in fish. Alternatively, eating more fish may lead to a reduction in other foods, like red meat, that are detrimental to vascular health. Or higher fish intake may simply be an indicator of a generally healthier diet or higher socioeconomic status, both associated with better vascular health.

The differences seen between white and oily fish may be explained by the way they are typically cooked (white fish is generally battered and deep fried, adding potentially damaging fats).

Although there's a possibility that some other unmeasured (confounding) factor may explain their results, the authors conclude that "they reinforce a potentially modest beneficial role of fish intake in the cause of cerebrovascular disease."

In addition, they say their findings are in line with current dietary guidelines that encourage fish consumption for all; and intake of fish oils to people with pre-existing or at high risk of heart disease. They also support the view that future nutritional guidelines should be principally "food based."

In an accompanying editorial, authors from the Division of Human Nutrition at Wageningen University suggest that although it is "reasonable" to advise patients that eating one or two portions of fish per week could reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, any benefit of long chain omega 3 fatty acid supplementation is likely to be small. They say it is possible, however, that patients with additional risk factors such as diabetes may benefit.

Hallandale Beach, FL (PRWEB) October 29, 2012

Premier Wellness Center and Day Spa, located on the second floor of 1250 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd, would like to introduce their new Anti-Inflammatory Diet and Nutrition Program to residents and visitors of and around South Florida.

Scientific research has revealed that most modern diseases that plague our society are caused by diet induced chronic inflammation. Just to name a few, many of the conditions that are driven by this can be as severe as heart disease and cancer, or as minor as feeling tired. The program itself consists of a comprehensive consultation and wellness examination that includes a food allergy test, a digitized body fat analysis, and a pH test. This is followed by a thorough consultation and review of all the test results and then followed by a diet plan with a customized nutritional supplementation program,

?It is our belief that this new diet and nutrition program will modernize how we eat and live. In turn, this will help promote a healthier lifestyle and lengthen life spans.? says Dr. DiCarlo. ?By introducing the concept of ?deflaming?, we will reduce and even reverse the devastating effects of long standing inflammation in our bodies with the proper use of food and nutritional supplements.?

Dr. Christopher A. DiCarlo is the founder and president of Premier Wellness Center and Day Spa. He is a Chiropractic physician who is board certified in Anti-Aging Medicine from the American Board of Antiaging Health Practioners as well as certified in numerous other health related fields. He is accompanied by a team of highly educated physicians including Kevin McGrath D.C., James Stock D.C., George Herrera M.D., Anthony Perrotti D.O., Cynthia Chang A.P and their newest member Dr. Christina Kotalik, a Chiropractic Physician & a health and fitness enthusiast who administers the program.

Though inflammation is the body?s natural response to injury or attack by germs, it can also be the foundation to many age-related diseases. It is important to avoid factors that will cause unnecessary inflammation such as an improper diet or an unbalanced pH level. In order to insure a longer and healthier life for all its clients Premier Wellness Center and Day Spa has designed their Anti-Inflammatory Program with this in mind.

Premier Wellness Center and Day Spa is a Health & Wellness Center located in Hallandale and offers a wide array of health services including Chiropractic and Physical Therapy, Non-surgical Orthopedics, Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, Anti-Aging Medicine, Hormone Replacement, HCGWeight Loss, and has an exclusive Day Spa and complete fitness center just to name a few. Is Social Media Improving Social Skills? A Look at Communication ...

Everyone is connected, or so it seems. After all, there are more mobile devices (4.8 billion) than toothbrushes (4.2 billion) on the planet, according to Mindjumpers.

Social media occupies a central place in today?s communication. Yet, is it a tool that creates connectedness ? or superficiality?

Tools of the Baby Boomers

A quick review of yesterday?s tools reveals many that seem outdated today: greeting and handwritten cards, landline phones (even phone booths), and a larger focus on in-person communications.

Some of these tools and previous focuses have been undeniably altered by today?s tools. Items like handwritten cards have been abandoned, at least in the mainstream. Technology has altered all of these items.

Even with the baby boomer generation, there has been a development that has greatly affected communication and socialization in society.

The Emergence of the Cell Phone

While cellphones first appeared in the 1940s, it is safe to say the devices gained widespread appeal in the ?80s and ?90s. Their development in the following decades increased convenience and usability, along with ?today?s? technologies, the most notable being text messaging.

Even in their early stages, cellphones gave users a taste of the convenience of enhanced connectedness. The emergence of the cellphone was a precursor to more modern methods of communication.

While early cellphones can be classified as tools of yesterday, clearly the devices have since been paired with more modern communication methods such as text messaging and Internet connectivity. They have been taken much further today, with the availability of free cellphones and impressive, eye-opening features.

Today?s Tools

The tools of today ? Smartphones and feature phones, tablets, laptops and netbooks, blogs, and apps ? are powerful, varied and suitable for just about any platform you can imagine. From personal to business use, the drastic increase in connectivity has altered today?s communication methods greatly.

The International Telecommunications Union reports that a mobile operator in Estonia created the world?s first mobile identification service. Citizens were able to cast a vote in parliamentary elections in 2011 on a mobile phone, illustrating yet another use for today?s technology.

On a more basic level, many people rely heavily on these methods of communication. Social media, text messaging, and e-mail, most notably, have greatly changed society. It?s easier to stay in touch ? but is that a good thing?

Is Social Media Superior?

Social media drives today?s society. It?s difficult to find a website or any mobile device without this type of integration. Businesses are even using it internally, as one case study provides impressive results of its integration. Of course, the focus of social media is on ?social? use in today?s culture.

It is possible ? even easy ? for social media to be a crutch. As with any tool, though, social media must be used in the right away to avoid superficiality and over reliance.

Social media has the ability to improve social skills and connectedness. However, users must be careful not to forget the tools of yesterday that still maintain certain advantages ? aside from the phone booths, of course.

Future of Technology in Education ? Rovin from Gurukul The School ...

Name of Applicant: Rovin Singh
Grade: XI
School: Gurukul The School
City: Ghaziabad
State: Uttar Pradesh
Country: India

In today?s world education has gone to such a far extent that now it is not been limited into the four walls of classroom but much-much far beyond that. Every school is equipping with smart-learn class making learning stuff to be understood more quickly. Even student are taking interest when their studies come with an exciting animation and secure good marks in even their weakest era. In future technology will be so advanced that students may need not to submit their assignments on paper instead they may submit those through mails. We see nowadays that many of class work are done on soft copy and are given to teacher through CDs. Technological innovation has longed a hallmark of academic research, and may now be changing the very way that teachers teach and students learn. For academic institutions, charged with equipping students to compete in today?s knowledge economy, the possibilities are great. Distance education, sophisticated learning, management systems and the opportunity to collaborate with research partners from around the world are just some of the transformational benefits that universities are embracing. Now here we get INTERNET the most vital role playing organ of education, which has upgraded so much that without this internet it is becoming difficult to complete their works, through internet we are getting gigantic amount of knowledge, from history of unidentified village to our solar system ,every information can be gathered from it. In fact it has been considered as soul of education.one can have a conference from multiple universities of world and discuss issues without any loss of money in transporting. We are constantly moving towards development in all aspects and so in education, online learning is also gaining a firm foothold in schools around the world. Some Institutions also are now offering online courses, where students don?t need to attend regular classes. Many of them consider online learning key to advancing their mission, placing advanced education within reach of people who might otherwise not be able to access it. Through online learning one can refer any chapter, take his IQ test or prepare for his exams by applying an online test, some of the companies offer free learning on internet. Once it used to be that a student has to work hard day and night to fetch the knowledge inside books and sacrifice his own needs and activities but the world changed a lot and today a student is getting multimedia classes clearing the minutest doubt of student and he can enjoy also because he no more need to find important material from books and an improvement in academics is seen clearly. If we progress in upgrading education with technology like this then the day is no far when a class will be no less than a museum of technology. We had never wondered that education will become so advanced but we got it, at time we are running with A.C classrooms, smart learn classes, 3-D labs, touch screen computers etc. Technology has had and will continue to have a significant impact on education whereas Technological innovation will have a major influence on teaching methodologies over the next five years. In fact, technology will become core in attracting students towards their studies. Institutions view technology as having a largely positive impact on their campuses, as students try to reach that institution where they get best of technologies which perfectly results in scholastic development. Distance education is also becoming increasingly global, with institutions overseas leveraging advanced technologies to put education within reach of many more individuals around the world .Many people believe that technology will become even more interwoven into the fabric of academic life. No generation is more at ease with online, collaborative technologies than today?s young people, ?Digital natives?, who has grown up in an immersive computing environment. Where a notebook and pen may have formed the tool kit of prior generations, today?s college students come to class armed with smart phones, laptops and iPods. This era of pervasive technology has significant implications for higher education. Public and private sectors say that technological innovation will have a major impact on teaching methodologies over the next five years. ?Technology allows students to become much more engaged in constructing their own knowledge, and cognitive studies show that ability is a key to learning success,? Online degree programs and distance learning have gained a firm foothold in universities around the world. What was once considered a niche channel for the delivery of educational content has rapidly become mainstream, creating wider access to education, new markets for content and expanded revenue opportunities for academic institutions. Technological change occurring in our midst will alter the perception of a campus from a one dimensional concept to a multi-dimensional one. Social-networking tools are helping to build connections with alumni and support career service activities. E-marketing campaigns expand the reach and success of recruiting and fundraising efforts, and drive down the cost of direct-mail campaigns. Many institutions struggle with the twin challenges of rising information technology (IT) costs and the need to avoid technological obsolescence. In addition, insufficient resources, lack of staff and other technological issues. Despite these challenges, most believe that technology will become ever more interwoven into the fabric of academic life. Technology is enabling multi-modal teaching, changing curricula and spawning rich forms of online research and collaboration Sophisticated learning-management systems and enhanced video and presentation tools are among other innovations that respondents say are likely to have a profound effect on the academic experience. It is interesting to note that despite the growing array of technology-enabled teaching tools available; nearly three-quarters of participants say that the greatest potential benefit of technology is something far more straightly forward. We are proceeding into technology that we are in threat that one day we may be replaced by robots in future generation. We are continuous in making robots and all industries are fully equipped with robots. In spite all these a teacher cannot be ever replaced by technologies; a teacher can deliver that content that technology can never. In fact many topics in science are such that a teacher?s presence is must. A teacher is a person whose comparison is impossible to make with technology. So we have concluded that in earlier era teachers were considered the only source of fetching the knowledge and no reference could be taken in spite those heavy books but now a person can refer internet and the online classrooms having conference with teachers. Schools are also developing their schools with equipping their classes with multimedia and advanced labs. We will soon be meeting a generation where we will be completely depended on technologies and education will be full of technology. But technological education is comparatively less efficient than a teacher teaching live in classroom.

96% Argo

'Argo'. Ben Affleck, take a bow. A magnificent achievement in pacing and tension, bringing an unbelievable true story to life. There's a line towards the beginning, when they're trying to sell The Hollywood Option, that goes something like, "And everybody knows they'd shoot in Stalingrad with Pol Pot directing if it would sell tickets." This cynical undercurrent that still permeates through Hollywood today, arguably more so, grounds this film in a believability that would be hard to artificially create solely for this film. It's one of the many cheeky shots the film takes, having a go at acting, directing and everything in between. Affleck's camera movements are frenetic and clear all at once, swooping, circling and darting rapidly on occasion, most noticeable in the opening hysteria at the embassy. The last twenty or so minutes, where 'Argo' ratchets up the tension, is owed in large to some brilliant editing, switching between the four parties involved, while never needing to cheat the audience in taking them down a false path. There was an audible sign of relief in the theatre when that plane finally takes off! Then there's Ben Affleck the actor. First things first. I have a large man-crush on his beard. Affleck doesn't overplay his character, but he nails the emotional moments, and I was totally on board his crazy plan, with his heart very much in the right place. The supporting cast is insane, but Bryan Cranston and Alan Arkin shine the brightest, getting the killer lines written by Chris Terrio.I loved 'Gone Baby Gone' and 'The Town'. It gives me great pleasure to see Affleck stretching out from his familiar Boston, making something completely different, and getting it so right.

Local Routes to Nearby Roots | FamilyTreeUniversity.com

Johann Homann [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

Map of Colonial Virginia, Johann Homann [Public domain] via Wikimedia Commons.

My American roots reside firmly in Virginia. I find this funny, seeing as I now live in the state and had always wanted to live on the East Coast near D.C.? Odd how life?s natural choreography can sometimes bring you home.

Not all of my family hails from the Old Dominion State.? I have a good share from North Carolina, a line from New England, and a couple from Maryland and South Carolina.? They all merge in Kentucky and Indiana, which makes sense considering the migration patterns of the time.? But if you are a regular reader of this blog, you already know that.? What is truly remarkable is the story of a family line that that settled in the place I now live: Virginia.

So far in my research I have nearly a dozen family lines that land here from across the pond, many of which settled within a few hours? drive of my current home.? Granted, I live in the middle of the state. Depending on traffic, everything is just a few hours away.? It takes an hour to reach the D.C.-Maryland border, two hours to West Virginia, four to North Carolina and three to the coast.? Most of the family homestead areas are within a three-hour radius of where I live, and I?m just aching to go visit.

Imagine my delight when I discovered that I could drive 15 miles from my home to the county court house and see documents relating to my family.? Even better, I went to the local branch of the county library? five miles from my house?and found the same ancestors in county history books.? I sat on the floor of the library, and in just 20 minutes identified several passages that held information about my ancestor.? One patron looked bewildered, but being a stay-at-home mom, I feel more comfortable on the floor than in a chair.

Before going to the library I knew very little about Samuel Givens and his wife Sarah Cathey.? They were both born in Antrim, Ireland and came to Pennsylvania in 1735, and then onto Orange County, Virginia in 1739.? The part of Orange County they lived in is now Augusta County, which was officially incorporated in1745.? With them came all but their youngest child. He was born here in Virginia, a few weeks after his father?s death in 1740.? They were John, Samuel, James, Martha, Elizabeth, William, Margret and Sarah.? It is through his youngest, Sarah, that I am descended.

I never thought I would be able to go to a local library and find family information unless I moved back to Indiana.? Over the summer I went to a couple of different libraries while on vacation, and found several books with places, names and dates, but there is nothing like going to your own local library and finding info on your ancestors.? It was such a thrill.? Next on my list is the Orange County Historical Society, which has a library in the Town of Orange, our county seat, with indexes of courthouse records and much more.

I?m ready to begin planning these road trips to surrounding counties for further research, but most will have to wait until a school break.? I would love to figure out where their land was located, but with the metes and bounds descriptions it may be difficult.? Even if I can?t locate them precisely, I can at least take my trusty camera and document the area for the rest of my family.

Gas prices jump as refineries shut ahead of storm

Mike Groll / AP

Motorists fill their vehicles and and gas cans in preparation for Hurricane Sandy Monday in Middleburgh, N.Y. Gas prices are likely to rise in the region until area refineries can safely reopen.

By Reuters

The supply of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel into the East Coast ground virtually to a halt Monday as Hurricane Sandy forced the closure of two-thirds of the region's refineries, its biggest pipeline, and most major ports.

Gasoline prices jumped as much as 11 cents a gallon on commodities markets as traders feared that power outages and flooding could leave refiners struggling to restore operations after the broadest storm ever to hit the United States. Prices later pared gains to close up about 6 cents a gallon at $2.757.

As Sandy neared the coast refinery, pipeline, port and terminal operators shuttered or reduced operations, increasing the risk that bottlenecks would keep fuel supplies from reaching customers.

"Given the recent tightness of supplies in New York Harbor, this weather event is only likely to perpetuate strength in gasoline prices," BNP Paribas oil analysts Harry Tchilinguirian and Gareth Lewis-Davies said in a research note.

Colonial Pipeline, the nation's largest oil products pipeline that connects the East Coast to Gulf Coast refiners, was set to close its main line to Philadelphia and New York, halting delivery of up to 15 percent of the region's fuel demand.

Nearly 70 percent of the region's refining capacity was on track to be idled. Phillips 66
confirmed it had completely shut its giant Bayway, N.J., refinery, the area's second-largest plant, known as the "gasoline machine" for its key role supplying motor fuel to the New York City area.

Philadelphia Energy Solutions began the precautionary closure of key units at its Philadelphia refinery, the region's biggest.

"Many of the process units have been shut down, others are in 'standby,' and the remainder have been brought to their minimum safe operating levels," said spokeswoman Cherice Corley.

The storm comes as low inventories of refined products have stirred concerns of potential price spikes during the winter heating season.

The precautionary refinery closures are more widespread than during Hurricane Irene in August 2011, when only the Bayway plant shut completely.

While refiners escaped any serious damage during that hurricane, many fear Sandy's massive storm surge -- forecast to be as high as 11 feet -- could breach plant defenses and cause damaging flooding, which can sometimes take weeks to repair. Abrupt power outages also can damage refinery equipment.?

Discussing how Hurricane Sandy could impact energy prices in the Northeast, with Matt Smith, Energy Burrito blog author.
