Do smokers care about cancer? - Quit Smoking - EzineMark

Despite the numerous health warnings aimed at smokers to persuade them to quit their smoking habit, many people still do reach out for a cigarette. It poses the question; do smokers really care about cancer?

A recent survey showed that smokers are more likely to develop prostate cancer, but only half of these people are likely to get themselves checked in the first place. This research comes from professional researchers from Plymouth, Italy and America, who showed the links between the smoking habit and prostate disease.

The survey went on to show that around 50% of non-smokers and around 65% of ex-smokers had been screened for prostate disease, but only 30% of smokers had actually been screened for prostate disease.

Dr Yaniv Hanoch who is the Associate Professor in Psychology at Plymouth University, commented, "Smokers, by the nature of their habit, are seemingly less concerned about their general state of health than the rest of the population. But individuals who engage in unhealthy behaviours such as smoking are at increased risk of both suffering a disease and failing to detect it."

Of course, there are many things that can cause or prompt the onset of prostate disease. However, research has shown that smoking can be a major contributing factor.

One smoker said, ?Despite the constant campaigns which are aimed to shock me into quitting smoking, I could not give up the habit for many years. I knew of all of the damage which smoking could be doing to my lungs and to my heart, but the smoking habit seem to have a grasp on me unlike any other habit I'd ever had.

This is mainly down to the chemical in the smoking known as nicotine. Nicotine can be really difficult to overcome and once it has been in your system for long enough, you feel like you just cannot cope without it. It therefore didn't matter what the campaigns were showing me on the television and on billboards, I knew that smoking was unhealthy for me but I just could not bring myself to stop.?

Many other smokers would agree with the extract above, noting that the nicotine addiction is much more than something which will power can overcome.

Many people attempt to quit smoking by using quit smoking products as an aid, and as a nicotine replacement therapy. Products like nicotine gums, patches or the electronic cigarette, which is a popular way of receiving instant nicotine relief, allows the smoker to gradually wean their addiction down.

The ability to have doses of nicotine when your body seems to crave them the most means that you do not need to reach for the cigarette and can keep cravings at bay with these devices and products. It is hoped that by adopting such therapies and combining them with your own will power, people can quit smoking and reduce their likelihood of contracting major diseases.
