CANNES -- Aishwarya Rai?Bachchan was joined by?Madhur Bhandarkar?and UTV?s CEO?Ronnie Screwvala?at?the Majestic Beach to discuss their upcoming project,?Heroine.?Directed by Bhandarkar and produced by?UTV Motion Pictures, the film is a contemporary story about the trials and tribulations of an actress.?
Indian cinema seems to be gaining popularity around the world,? said Screwvala. ?Bollywood is all about song and dance and the heroine, and there?s no better way to capture that iconic image than in a movie.??
When asked if the story has any connection to her personal life, Rai Bachchan was quick to respond: ?It's not my biography, you heard it here first.??
Although Bollywood films are typically filled with music and dance, emerging filmmakers are moving in a different direction. ?In the last five years, it has morphed into entertainment and realism,? said Screwvala. ?The youth segment is the largest in?India?and that?s the audience we?re looking at.??
With films such as?Page 3, Corporate?and?Traffic Signal?to his credit, Bhandarkar recognizes that the new generation of Indian filmgoers are ready for serious and edgier films, and are beginning to shun the Bollywood moniker. ?For me it?s the?Indian film industry,? he said.
