Cheerleading

Maryland Marlins

Competing in Orlando, Fla. against the best teams from around the world, the Maryland Marlins Tsunami cheerleading team placed fourth at the World Cheerleading competition earlier this month.

The Tsunami girls were forced to stop in the middle of both of their 2 1/2-minute routines. In the first performance, the lights went out and in the second, one of the Tsunami's top tumbling and stunt members went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her knee.

On both occasions, the Tsunami girls were directed backstage for a lengthy weight. Then both times they were required to re-perform their entire routine from the beginning. This meant doing their routine four times over the two-day competition.

This was the team's third trip to the USASF Cheerleading Worlds, the second in the Large Senior All Girl division. The team is comprised of 35 girls ranging in age from 12-18.

Softball

Maryland Chill travel

The Maryland Chill 12-U Purple fastpitch softball team traveled to Laurel May 7-8 to play in the 11th annual May Madness. This tournament consisted of some of the top 12-U A teams in the state.

The Chill opened the tournament a little slow May 7, posting a 1-2 record, although both losses were very close.

On May 8, the team continued to use its recipe for success by riding the great starting pitching of Allie DeGrouchy and Evvie Buehlman and as the team marched through the championship bracket to play in the championship game.

The Chill continued to get timely hitting all day from Hannah Cimerola, Allison Wilcox, Krysta Clark, Madison Legget, Mackenzie Hockensmith, Callie McCleary and Torrance Kang. The Chill's defense was stellar led by shortstop Erin Collins, who turned a triple play and finished a double play. Tyler Merritt again gave the Chill the outstanding catching that helps out the starting pitching.

The Chill defeated the WHC Fever 98, 7-1; Germantown, 12-7, and then the Lake Shore Lightning, 5-3, May 8 in the championship game. The Chill had lost to Lake Shore, 4-2, the previous day.

Soccer

Columbia Soccer Club travel

Sunday, the CSC Storm Runners (U-15 girls) stayed on top of the standings in their Baltimore Beltway Soccer League season by forging a 1-1 tie with the Severn Attack. The Storm Runners and Attack played a scoreless first half which was highlighted by several close calls on the Storm Runners net that were thwarted by goalkeeper Carley Noppinger.

In the second half, the addition of the late arriving midfielder Lilly Hermina provided a needed spark as the Storm Runners put in the lead goal with about 15 minutes to play in the match. The scoring play started with combination passes between Hermina and fellow midfielder Christina Kochanski. Kochanski then fed the ball down the right wing to Katherine MacKie who dodged a defender and made a perfect cross to forward Julie Delmont. Delmont sidestepped the Attack central defenders and hit a wicked shot that was parried by the Attack keeper. Forward Jonae Queen was there for the rebound and she calmly left footed the ball into the unguarded net.

At this point the Attack pushed everyone forward and put the pressure on the Storm Runners defense for the remainder of the game. With about 3 minutes remaining, the pressure finally paid off and they scored the equalizer on a long cross from the right wing which found a streaking Attack forward at the far post.

The Storm Runners will finish their season next week with a match against the Crofton Crush. A victory should give the Storm Runners a third straight league championship.

The CSC Galaxy Premier also tied their match on Sunday, 1-1, against the Baltimore Bays Blues. This leaves the Galaxy with an undefeated record of 4-0-1 and in second place in the NCSL Division 3. They are currently two points behind the front running Frederick Football Club who sport a perfect 5-0 record and Galaxy's opponent May 15.

Soccer Association of Columbia travel

The Soccer Association of Columbia U-13 girls Premier continued their WAGS season with a 2-1 victory over LOUD Red. SAC scored first after Nia Dorsey laid a perfect ball to Ann Bonner's left foot for a score from 25 yards. Devon Bodziony has been playing well all season, exemplified by stopping a penalty kick from LOUD in the first half. SAC scored again on a counter attack. A quick, controlled clearance by SAC's back line helped Dorsey and Nia Crump combine to cross the ball from the left side to Jen Giles who waited patiently on the far post to slide it past LOUD Red's goalie.

The SAC U-9 Girls Premier won, 8-0, in their Central Maryland Short-Sided League game last weekend against Bethesda. Angie Geralis, Andrea Plano and Ere Oh anchored the defense to preserve the shutout, while Lydia Jervier, Ellie Cirovski, Paige Rosenfeld and Annie Cole were potent attackers up front for SAC. Camille McGarvey connected well with Isabella Nelson, Erin Halper and Jillian Smalls to ensure SAC controlled the midfield.
